Friends or Foes? - أصدقاء أم أعداء؟

What is Faith?

ما هو الإيمان؟

  “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Heb 11:1

وَأَمَّا الإِيمَانُ فَهُوَ الثِّقَةُ بِمَا يُرْجَى وَالإِيقَانُ بِأُمُورٍ لاَ تُرَى.

3 ways faith (pistis) is used in Scriptures

ثلاث طرق يستخدم فيها الإيمان في الكتاب المقدس

1. BELIEF – MIND الاعتقاد - العقل

Heb 11:6 “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

وَلَكِنْ بِدُونِ إِيمَانٍ لاَ يُمْكِنُ إِرْضَاؤُهُ، لأَنَّهُ يَجِبُ أَنَّ الَّذِي يَأْتِي إِلَى اللهِ يُؤْمِنُ بِأَنَّهُ مَوْجُودٌ، وَأَنَّهُ يُجَازِي الَّذِينَ يَطْلُبُونَهُ.

2. TRUST – HEART الثقة - القلب

John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”

لاَ تَضْطَرِبْ قُلُوبُكُمْ. أَنْتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ فَآمِنُوا بِي.

تَوَكَّلْ عَلَى الرَّبِّ بِكُلِّ قَلْبِكَ

Pro 3:5

3. OBEDIENCE – WILL الطاعة - الإرادة

Heb 11:8 “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”

بِالإِيمَانِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ لَمَّا دُعِيَ أَطَاعَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ إِلَى الْمَكَانِ الَّذِي كَانَ عَتِيداً أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ مِيرَاثاً، فَخَرَجَ وَهُوَ لاَ يَعْلَمُ إِلَى أَيْنَ يَأْتِي.

Reason deals with all truths that can be known to be true

HOW DO WE KNOW GOD?

We know God by faith and reason - نعرف الله بالإيمان والعقل

Two eye to know God (Head & Heart) - One eye cannot contradict the other. Both are used to know truth.

عينان لمعرفة الله (الرأس والقلب) - لا تناقض بينهما.  كلاهما يستخدم لمعرفة الحقيقة.

THE EXISTENCE OF GOD - وجود الله

We use the 2^nd eye to argue His existence because He cannot be seen with the 1st eye and Atheists do not believe in Him with the 3rd eye.

نستخدم العين الثانية لنناقش وجوده لأنه لا يمكن رؤيته بالعين الأولى ولا يؤمن الملحدون به بالعين الثالثة

FAITH & KNOWLEDGE IN THE SCRIPTURES�الإيمان والمعرفة في الكتاب المقدس

• Scriptures was written to produce both faith and knowledge
• 1 John 5:13 “These things I have written to you that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”
• John 6:69: “We have believed and have known that you are the Holy One of God.”

• كتب الكتاب المقدس لتحقيق كل من الإيمان والمعرفة
• كَتَبْتُ هَذَا إِلَيْكُمْ أَنْتُمُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بِاسْمِ ابْنِ اللهِ لِكَيْ تَعْلَمُوا أَنَّ لَكُمْ حَيَاةً أَبَدِيَّةً، وَلِكَيْ تُؤْمِنُوا بِاسْمِ ابْنِ اللهِ.
• وَنَحْنُ قَدْ آمَنَّا وَعَرَفْنَا أَنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ اللَّهِ الْحَيِّ

THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE - أهمية المعرفة

• Isa 5:13 “My people have gone in captivity because they have no knowledge.”
• Pro 19:2 “It is not good for a soul to be without knowledge”
• Rom 10:2 “They have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.”
• Hos 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

THEOLOGY & SPIRITUALITY - اللاهوتيات و الروحانية

• No separation between the mind which knows God and the heart which loves him.
• The Early Church Fathers were theologians and saints

IS IT WRONG TO STUDY THE EVIDENCE?�هل من الخطأ دراسة الأدلة؟

Jesus appeared to the disciples and “presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.” Acts 1:3

اَلَّذِينَ أَرَاهُمْ أَيْضاً نَفْسَهُ حَيّاً بِبَرَاهِينَ كَثِيرَةٍ بَعْدَ مَا تَأَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَظْهَرُ لَهُمْ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً وَيَتَكَلَّمُ عَنِ الْأُمُورِ الْمُخْتَصَّةِ بِمَلَكُوتِ اللهِ.

Peter appealed to evidence and to eyewitnesses when he preached “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know.” Acts 2:22

أَيُّهَا الرِّجَالُ الإِسْرَائِيلِيُّونَ اسْمَعُوا هَذِهِ الأَقْوَالَ: يَسُوعُ النَّاصِرِيُّ رَجُلٌ قَدْ تَبَرْهَنَ لَكُمْ مِنْ قِبَلِ اللهِ بِقُوَّاتٍ وَعَجَائِبَ وَآيَاتٍ صَنَعَهَا اللهُ بِيَدِهِ فِي وَسَطِكُمْ كَمَا أَنْتُمْ أَيْضاً تَعْلَمُونَ

BUT IS EVIDENCE ALL YOU NEED?�لكن هل الادلة هي كل ما تحتاجه؟

• Mat 13:58 “Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.”
• Heb 4:2 “The gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.”

• وَلَمْ يَصْنَعْ هُنَاكَ قُوَّاتٍ كَثِيرَةً لِعَدَمِ إِيمَانِهِمْ.
• لأَنَّنَا نَحْنُ أَيْضاً قَدْ بُشِّرْنَا كَمَا أُولَئِكَ، لَكِنْ لَمْ تَنْفَعْ كَلِمَةُ الْخَبَرِ أُولَئِكَ. إِذْ لَمْ تَكُنْ مُمْتَزِجَةً بِالإِيمَانِ فِي الَّذِينَ سَمِعُوا

John 12: 37 “Although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him.”

وَمَعَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ قَدْ صَنَعَ أَمَامَهُمْ آيَاتٍ هَذَا عَدَدُهَا لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِهِ

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH�اهمية الايمان

• Heb 11:3 “By faith we understand”
• 1Co 2:14 “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

• بِالإِيمَانِ نَفْهَمُ
• وَلَكِنَّ الإِنْسَانَ الطَّبِيعِيَّ لاَ يَقْبَلُ مَا لِرُوحِ اللهِ لأَنَّهُ عِنْدَهُ جَهَالَةٌ وَلاَ يَقْدِرُ أَنْ يَعْرِفَهُ لأَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا يُحْكَمُ فِيهِ رُوحِيّاً.

• “Faith is understanding’s step and understanding is faith’s reward.”
• “First believe, then understand.” (On the Creed 4)
• “If we wish to first know and then believe, we will not be able to know or believe.” (On the Gospel of John)

St. Augustine

• "الإيمان هو خطوة الفهم والفهم هو مكافأة الإيمان".
• آمِنْ ثم تعقل.
• إن اردنا أن نفهم أولاً ثم نؤمن، فإننا لا نقدر لا أن نفهم ولا أن نؤمن

“A man seeks the truth by the effort of reason and is disappointed. It is offered him by faith, and he accepts, and, having accepted, he finds that it satisfies his reason.”

"إن الإنسان يسعى إلى الحقيقة عن طريق الجهد العقلاني ويخيب أمله. وقد تعرض عليه الحقيقة بالإيمان ،وعندما يقبل بالإيمان ، يجد أنه يرضي عقله أيضاً".

فَإِذْ أَنَا وَاثِقٌ بِهَذَا أَعْلَمُ أَنِّي أَمْكُثُ وَأَبْقَى مَعَ جَمِيعِكُمْ لأَجْلِ تَقَدُّمِكُمْ وَفَرَحِكُمْ فِي الإِيمَانِ،

• Rom 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
• Rom 12:12 “Rejoicing in hope”

• وَلْيَمْلَأْكُمْ إِلَهُ الرَّجَاءِ كُلَّ َفَرِحِ وَسَلاَمٍ فِي الإِيمَانِ لِتَزْدَادُوا فِي الرَّجَاءِ بِقُوَّةِ الرُّوحِ الْقُدُسِ.
