(2) a few years ago, a pilot made a mistake and flew his plane over the community; the pilot was
released as a punishment
(3) telling of feelings - every night at dinner (each person tells a troubling feeling from the day and tries
to resolve it)
(4) Jonas’ dad is worried about a newchild who is not doing well (not thriving)-if he doesn’t start to do
better, he will be released; he is going to bring him home at night

Chapter 7 (audio)
-Asher will be Assistant Director of Recreation (if this was at Crocker, he would work for Mr. G)
-Fiona will be Caretaker of the Old
(3) the Chief Elder skips Jonas; Jonas is very embarrassed (in front of everyone!) and wonders what he has done wrong
Chapter 8 (audio)
-the community only has 1 Receiver at a time; the current Receiver is an old man with pale eyes (just like Jonas!) - he will train Jonas
-about 10 years ago, they tried another Receiver - that didn’t work (everyone is uncomfortable about this, but we don’t know why)
(2) qualities that make Jonas a good choice: intelligence, integrity (doing the right thing), courage,
wisdom, and “The Capacity to See Beyond”
-Jonas looks at the crowd and sees them in color, just like he saw the apple - he DOES have “The Capacity to See Beyond”
Chapter 9 (audio)
(2) Jonas asks his parents about the
Receiver from 10 years ago; we learn:
-she was a girl
-no one can say her name ever again, and it can’t be used for new babies (sign of disgrace)
-no one ever saw her again after the “failure”
(3) all of the Twelves received folders with
training materials; Jonas’ folder has one
piece of paper with his rules:
-Jonas looks at the crowd and sees them in color, just like he saw the apple
- he DOES have “The Capacity to See Beyond”
