Why and how did the Olympics start?

when the olympics started

  • The Ancient Greeks held athletic competitions in Olympia in the Peloponnese
  • The first written records of these events date back to 776BC.
  • The Games took place every four years, and were dedicated to ZEUS, the king of the gods.
  • They were open only to free man of Greek citizenship, which meant slaves; women and foreign men were unable to take part
  • women were not even allowed to watch the events.

HOW ARE THE COUNTRIES SELECTED TO HOST THE OLYMPICS?

HOSTING THE OLYMPICS

  • countries who are interested in hosting the olympics need to submit application to the IOC
  • then the IOC will announce the cities who they voted on and the cities that got announced will be have to submit a formal bid to the IOC
  • then IOC will call a meeting with all the members and select 5 countries
  • the city with the most votes from the members will be the one to host the olympics
