Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We give out business cards at District events such as the District Picnic every year, District Conference, and Fall Meeting.
  • Our district director(s) notifies us if they know of anyone moving into the area and puts us in contact with them. This method is average in effectiveness.
  • Facebook, WhatsApp
  • Hard copy letters for those with no email address from HQ
  • We tried mailing hard copies of invitation letters through HQ and mass mailing prospective new members during our reactivation campaign. This was somewhat successful, as it did find a few important members, but was also quite inefficient with <1% response rates from alumni in our area.
  • Engage Graduating Seniors at Spring Initiation
  • Recruiting from UMKC TBP graduates

Other methods to invite members to join? (2 of 3)

6

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • The alumni attend initiation at a university, and inform the graduating students that alumni chapters do exist, and that they may now become involved in an alumni chapter.
  • Fun events and invite new members to it via email invitation for the event. We got a couple of members to join because of event hype.
  • We attend Initiations and introduce the chapter
  • Not sure, I'm a new president.
  • Contact student chapter members graduating - usually not very effective
  • Explore the process to obtain new local alumni contact information so we can extend a welcome email. We'll look for the next email on July 1 and research the email sent to the Treasurer on April 1.
  • Students at initiation ceremonies. Average effectiveness.

Other methods to invite members to join? (3 of 3)

7

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Expanding on in-person contact, we invite incoming alumni to join at initiations (with appropriate introduction/permission from the chapters), and via our liaisons.
  • We give out business cards at initiations; we get a couple of people each time to join the email list.
  • Go to TBP collegiate events to network... Not sure of its effectiveness in recruiting yet.
  • Discord, personal text from officers to members or recent grads

How does your chapter communicate with members?

8

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

9 of 94

Other methods to communicate with members? (1 of 2)

9

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We have been trying out google chat for quicker communication. It seems to be average in effectiveness as certain people are most accustomed to it than others.
  • We sometimes meet in person and we communicate at our meetings through discussion.
  • In Person Invitation to the _next_ event at each event.
  • Google calendar invites - Excellent
  • Google chat, slack
  • Embedded into our website infrastructure, our chapter committees and officer board uses a group chat platform called Element. This is still being rolled out actively, but has been Better than Average so far, with minor accessibility issues. Prior to creating our Element server, we used WhatsApp group messages for committee communications.

10 of 94

Other methods to communicate with members? (2 of 2)

10

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We still use a group text for emergency officer communications, which is effective.
  • The officers still use Slack, but we haven't been promoting that to communicate with members.
  • Discord servers with local collegiate chapters and D15, this was more effective in getting current members to attend events.

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

19 of 94

Other methods to recruit new officers? (1 of 2)

19

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our chapter has sought out suggestions from Tricia.
  • Monthly meetings
  • We have also tried soliciting people at out regular meetings (virtual). This large group format is nowhere near effective as one-on-one requests.
  • Persuasion using activities as the excuse to talk about our chapter
  • Newsletter (2)
  • At in person events
  • Chapter surveys
  • General member meeting announcements, Officer general information meeting for all members
  • Since eligibility is limited to active membership, we solicit the active membership multiple times, both in person and via email.
  • I'm a completely new officer and haven't been involved in any of the above activities yet.

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We invite TBP alumni to connect with our chapter by sending out a representative to chapter initiations, where we personally congratulate new members on their induction and achievements. At these events, we introduce ourselves, highlight how the alumni chapter supports students, as they transition from school to the professional world, and offer guidance wherever possible to the TBP alumni. We also provide our

contact information, encouraging students to reach out and get involved at their own pace.

  • We have attended initiation ceremonies and talked about the alumni chapter, participated in events with collegiate chapters to build relationships. These relationships helped us when we approached recent grads looking for an officer.

21 of 94

How approach new members to be officers? (1 of 5)

21

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We basically go and talk to individuals that we know that could personally handle the position.
  • Once members start showing up to events more frequently and show interest in aiding the chapter we approach them about being on the board.
  • Our welcome email includes a statement about running for an officer position.
  • Just ask
  • Invite all members to run for officer positions
  • We typically on in-person communication whenever possible. As a smaller group, this has proved by far the most effective.
  • We discuss during meetings when we have new members join our meetings and events. We also reach out around elections to get people to run for positions.
  • Chapter is currently officers only

22 of 94

How approach new members to be officers? (2 of 5)

22

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We had our vice president step down and the role needed to be filled as soon as possible. We had two members interested in the role but unsure how that would fit into their schedule. Kirby suggested the Vice President role is shared between two people (Hannah and Kirby) to help lighten the work load of vice president and be flexible with their schedules in case something comes up. This is one example.
  • Richmond AC is still trying to build a critical mass of consistent membership. In-person attendance at Collegiate Chapter Initiations has been the best forum and venue to encourage graduating students to join the Alumni group.
  • Discuss in one-to-one at activities
  • By offering a fun and welcoming environment.

23 of 94

How approach new members to be officers? (3 of 5)

23

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Persuasion thru activities plus we help a quarterly in person formal meeting
  • We reach out to them via email or by speaking to them in person.
  • Emails, newsletters, and in person meetings
  • Usually by speaking with them at meetings and gatherings.
  • We explain to them what our chapter is like and that the time commitment is low.
  • Relaunched the chapter in 2025 with new officers. For the next year, we will use the newsletter, email and in-person events to raise awareness of officer positions to membership.
  • General member meeting to gauge interest, look for former officer/TBP other roles like SAB on people who move to the area.
  • Tell benefits of engagement and fun events we plan to do
  • Email (3)

24 of 94

How approach new members to be officers? (4 of 5)

24

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • In person has worked best for this, based on prior interactions in SEMIAC. If we notice someone actively attending and/or planning events, I will often discuss the prospect of appointment to a Director position before elections begin.
  • Email or interaction at an initiation ceremony
  • We have reached out to recent grads as we felt fresh ideas are needed.
  • Gauge their interest and time availability to attend events and help the chapter
  • We add people to the email list but don't see them at events, so we haven't talked to new members about officer positions.
  • I'm a completely new officer and haven't been involved in any of the above activities yet.

25 of 94

How approach new members to be officers? (5 of 5)

25

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We first asked members in person if they might be interested, followed up with text messages, and then had a meeting in person with the candidate who later become our Vice President. We are still working via personal relationships to get other officers.

Does your chapter conduct an officer transition?

27

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

28 of 94

What does transition consist of? (page 1 of 4)

28

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Newly elected officers participate in the training webinar hosted by Tricia.
  • N/A - not enough new officers to necessitate one
  • The transition consists of a short meeting with the previous officer for each position and discussion with the previous officers as a whole to pass along important information.
  • We keep one of the elected officers by re-electing them in to key Chapter positions
  • First monthly officer meeting reviews the chapter bylaws and works with the new officers to define the scope of activities for the two-year term.
  • Informal on the job
  • An in-person dinner with current and new executive committee members (first year for this)
  • Each officer position meets separately with the old position holder
  • Meetings

29 of 94

What does transition consist of? (page 2 of 4)

29

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Documents (roles & responsibilities) and 1:1 training / handover
  • Meeting/virtual training, documentation on Google drive
  • Overview of past and upcoming activity schedule, treasurer specifically involves account transfer at local credit union
  • An in-person meeting of the elected officers
  • Working with the past officer on chapter deliverables

  • Former president, Michelle Gaudreault, has supported monthly officer meetings when possible. Tricia G also provided background, links and process direction as all five officers (P, VP, S, T, one director) are new to the role.
  • Zoom online meeting to discuss each role responsibility get access to Google TBP account, answer questions.

30 of 94

What does transition consist of? (page 3 of 4)

30

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Meetings between the previous officer and the new officer. Google docs with relevant information that is updated by the old officer and shared with the new officer.
  • We go over the responsibilities over a call.
  • Meeting one on one to handover duties; attending new officer training
  • Documents in the google drive
  • Virtual meetings
  • We do a "topic of the month" for each of our monthly business meetings. Our April topic was the task delegation and officer transition meeting, where we delegated regular tasks and then had outgoing and incoming officers meet in groups.
  • Sharing past instructional emails & PDFs of guidelines, and doing some email exchanges.

31 of 94

What does transition consist of? (page 4 of 4)

31

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • The extent depends on the position. For treasurer there is more to transition than the other roles. Since we all work together on things there's not much to transition.
  • We didn't this year because the officers remained the same. In the past we go over the responsibilities listed in the bylaws vs what we actually do as officers
  • We verbally described duties and went over previous events that we have held. Since the previous president and the previous secretary switched roles and are still involved in the chapter, we are able to provide continuity.

  • We have a summer event that is Around June 28th to celebrate 2 Pi Day.
  • Pi Day for recruiting, then lots of Hockey, Baseball, Community base activities
  • Career panel with UMKC
  • Indy 500 Race themed event
  • We welcome new grads at a summer picnic.
  • We don’t have a dedicated event but one event was volunteering at the Houston Food Bank with Erick, Hannah, Robert, and myself. Nice way to spend the Saturday morning helping out those less fortunate. We also had attended an TBP induction at Prairie View College. I would also say Pi day is also a nice “official” event.
  • Attend the various Collegiate initiations

Signature events (2 of 3)

38

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Fall picnic - we invite all of the alumni chapter members and the student section as well. This year we held the picnic at the Kern's Food Hall - a new venue close to campus.
  • It’s a BBQ potluck. Also we attend the local student chapter's pi day. Also, we are starting to do more trivia nights at a local brewery that members seem to enjoy.
  • Our Pi Day event has been our signature/regular event for a while. However, we are looking into other signature events. We've been doing a lot of Detroit building tours and have been emphasizing the Michigan Central Building - our virtual Bent.

39

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Resume workshops. We give a resume presentation and run workshops with various local chapters and occasionally in conjunction with the Convention's Recruiting Fair.
  • Pi Day (and Year End Celebration)
  • Holiday Light show at the Denver Botanical Garden. Upcoming winter will be our 4th annual event.
  • Probably Pi Day. Right now, we are also considering rerunning multiple successful events every year, like TopGolf and bowling.
  • We attend Doors Open Milwaukee each year. This is an event where historical buildings and businesses have open houses for one weekend. We find locations that appeal to engineers. It's been well-received for the people who participate.

43

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Pi Day was hosted at a local restaurant and served as the re-launch for the Pikes Peak Alumni Chapter. The officers attended and met about 10 chapter members. The discussion focused on the relaunch and what types of events would interest the membership.
  • Pizza at a local pizza/brewery and a Pi day fun pamphlet with Pi related recipes and fun jokes.
  • There were two events - Pi day with a local college (San Jose State) and Pi day at a local brewery for alumni.
  • We were supposed to have pizza but canceled due to low RSVP.
  • Had to reschedule and hold in July due to snow. Picnic at a park.

Tau Beta Pi Day events this year (4 of 4)

44

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • This year, we played a jeopardy-themed trivia game, custom-built on our website, had dinner, and socializing and board games.
  • I celebrated as a individual but not as a chapter. I wore my TBP shirt to Volunteer at a public school. my son wore his Pi day socks to school.
  • Went to a Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen, set up decorations at a table, wore our apparel as officers, and chatted with visitors who stopped by our table. This was effective! (Didn't encounter any issues, but next time I may want to consider calling the restaurant in advance before setting up. Haha!)
  • We collaborated with LA B chapter on Pi day and LA E two days after for the pi day celebration.
  • Officers were traveling for work and district conferences.

51

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

52 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 1 of 11)

52

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Member Participation. Providing meaningful experiences and spreading awareness through mouth about the chapter's re-engagement in the community.
  • Communication with members and hosting events was something we struggled with the most. We are restarting from scratch with a couple years of dormancy so it has been hard to build our member base up again.
  • Engaging with alumni.
  • Everything depends on member participation. without this, events, officers, etc. can't happen.
  • Trying to get more turnout from new members at events
  • More consistent in person events. Setting an event and date rather than just asking
  • UMKC interaction
  • Getting members to show up
  • Getting a website created

53 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 2 of 11)

53

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our biggest struggle has been developing a viable plan for long-term continued growth beyond where we currently are. Having largely exhausted the HQ list and all the personal contacts with our active members, we've tried to recruit new graduates more heavily by making appearances at the collegiate initiations. However, this has shown only minimal success with few graduates choosing to remain in our

area of operation.

  • We have such a large member base (>10,000 TBP members in the area) that it is difficult to figure out where to best spend our time and effort. We struggle to get good engagement from more than 10-40 people each year.
  • Engagement at Student Chapter events are being used in an attempt to increase membership.

54 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 3 of 11)

54

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our numbers had severely declined over previous years, so we are working on rebuilding our active base and figuring out the events they want us to hold.
  • One of the biggest challenges we face is alumni involvement. This likely stems from a communication gap between collegiate and alumni chapters. Understandably, many alumni relocate for work, have shifting priorities, or are simply busy

with life—which makes sustaining and building an active group difficult. We respect that everyone must do what's best for them, but we continue to send updates and reminders about upcoming events and chapter news in case their interests have changed or availability opens up.

  • recruitment - still working to improve this
  • Relaunching the chapter - getting membership involved.

55 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 4 of 11)

55

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Hiring Chairs for the various committees, membership, service projects, fundraising, social events, community outreach, we are trying different methods, like FB request for volunteers, young board lacks a bit on experience yet they have a real desire to succeed, specially in view of having the Convention in St Louis in 2027.
  • No one really wants to have or attend meetings. No one really wants to become involved or do anything. No one has any ideas regarding things we could do. We also don't have any money in our treasury to do anything.

56 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 5 of 11)

56

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Recruitment of new members and participation of existing members. Also, it is difficult to get student participation in our events. Next year we plan to offer a "free one-year membership" to graduating students who provide us with a permanent email address. This is important because most of the students will lose their college email when they graduate. We also asked the student chapter president to distribute

membership forms along with a description of our activities (newsletter). We are trying new venues and events - this year we went to a Food Hall for our annual picnic. Next year we are planning a pickleball picnic. We have also increased communication to members through our Linked-In group and our periodic newsletters.

  • Member participation. New activity ideas, collaboration with collegiate chapters

57 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 6 of 11)

57

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • This year, we had lower participation than last year for both Alumni and Students. Communication was much less good with Collegiate Chapters this year.
  • Primary communication with members is through newsletter, but the hit rate is low.
  • We will do more fun events
  • Not entirely sure- getting an event up
  • Members being active
  • Hard to get in contact with some collegiate chapters and getting them started on TBP initiation or holding joint events. Attempted to contact supervisors and collegiate TBP eboard members.
  • Recruitment by far. Currently working closely with collegiate IL-A to extend membership to graduate students to increase membership and reduce planning load on IL-A officers for events

58 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 7 of 11)

58

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our member participation is very low. We tried holding the Pi Day event at a great location to attract more participation. We do send periodic emails using the MailChimp distribution list. The response rate is very low.
  • The main issue was member participation in events. For the next year, the chapter plans to increase the number and diversity of events to hopefully have more members

participate.

  • We send 450+ emails for events and get a very small response (<10). We are lucky if we get 1% response. Post more on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook). Maybe a monthly newsletter... Summary of what we did and what is upcoming. Share the TBP Google calendar with the members.

59 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 8 of 11)

59

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Image and Recruitment - specifically with the MI-Q, MI-D, and MI-H chapters, and retaining graduates from these chapters. We have an excellent collaboration relationship with MI-E and MI-I, but we are working to address the other three chapters with better support / interactions from our liaisons. We are struggling to fill these positions, as it is hard to fill these with officers from outside of the schools.
  • Also regarding communications, the chapter was working on improving communications and transitioning to using new platforms and in the process we lost some consistency with member outreach. Now that we’ve established our website, we should be able to start a steady flow of communication again which would give our members more advance notice of our events.

60 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 9 of 11)

60

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Attracting enough interest in chapter events to make them worth holding. We sent a survey to find out what they're interested in.
  • Officer retention. Currently holding ad hoc election to re-staff.
  • More communication with the local chapters to collaborate on events and recruit alumni officers
  • Variety of events
  • Interest in the chapter in general. We are going to pivot to focusing more on coming alongside the collegiate chapters with two goals: 1) enrich the TBP experience for the collegiate chapters 2) promote the alumni chapter to students who will be graduating.
  • We have only a few regular participants however the Southwest Florida area is growing and should result in more members joining.

61 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 10 of 11)

61

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Inactivity resulting in a lack of my own leadership for a few months, since I got very busy with family, important relationships, and responsibilities (and I still am to a big degree). I would also add communication with our local collegiate chapter since they seemed to start ghosting us about halfway through the year, and as a result I missed their spring initiation. However, I made connections at

another collegiate chapter about 90 minutes away from us, and they loved having me over to participate in their own events! Time management will be the key to fixing this for me moving forward, but family comes first.

  • It seems like our chapter has been dormant for some time; the challenge is to recruit members and get them engaged.

62 of 94

What did chapter struggle with most? (page 11 of 11)

62

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • It has been difficult to get officers to respond to emails or pick a time to meet. It helps if you pick the next meeting time during the current meeting.
  • The active membership is low - 4 members and the few consistent members try to develop and cover as many activities as competing work commitments will allow. Active engagement at Student Chapter

events are being used in an attempt to increase membership.

  • We are still struggling to get interested members to attend the actual event. We are working to create a Instagram, have a Facebook group, and we are active on D15, CA L, CA U's Discord servers. With a third officer, we are gaining traction to recruit members and have had new members interact with us at events.

63 of 94

Improvement for chapter to make? (page 1 of 6)

63

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Continue to provide opportunities for members.
  • Hold regular events and consistently get 5 to 6 people at each one. Also sending regular event emails.
  • Schedule events that interest alumni.
  • More participating members
  • Certainly having more chairs for the various committees.
  • More in person events
  • Start early
  • We could improve our offering of events. Most of our successful ones are fairly simple such as meeting for dinner at a restaurant. So far this has proved difficult due to tight schedules among our members and widespread hesitance to commit to more exotic events with enough prior notice to plan them.
  • Increase the number of first-time members at events

64 of 94

Improvement for chapter to make? (page 2 of 6)

64

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • To increase the number of active members and hold meetings and events periodically through out the year.
  • We need a dedicated representative for each college we serve who handles communication with the president of the college chapter.
  • Increase active membership and participation.
  • If we doubled the number of new members
  • Personally, I'd like to run better events that draw in more people and attempt to get new folks involved in officer roles and committees, but we've had lackluster results for the last several years.
  • We could try to improve our image. We could get more people involved. We could plan more activities, and try to get more people interested in participating.

65 of 94

Improvement for chapter to make? (page 3 of 6)

65

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Increase membership and find a couple of interesting tours, including joint tours with other professional organizations. Increase student participation in our events.
  • Increase engagement with new members
  • Have 1 Liaison per Collegiate Chapter who engages with President regularly (monthly?)
  • We struggle to answer this question
  • Hosting more sponsored events to improve participation and involvement.
  • Clearer methods of communication from officers to active and prospective members
  • More charity/community service events
  • Recruiting at least 2 new members
  • Start STEM activities as this seemed to excite the most interest in membership at the relaunch.

  • Connection with the collegiate chapter - USAFA (Zeta) - make contact, attend initiation, host joint events. Explore starting a new chapter at UCCS (University of Colorado, Colorado Springs). These efforts should increase membership participation.
  • Invite people --> a mixers for new people in the area. Try two per year to see what is response. Have alumni/student mixer events.
  • Increase the number and diversity of events. Increase the number of members that want to run for officer positions. Determine a method to collect enough donations to pay for the dues to nationals.
  • Having more members attend events
  • Increase variety of events to make them more attractive/useful for our members.
  • More events
  • Getting an event up

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • More involvement with collegiate chapters; consistent participating members; increase in membership
  • The chapter needs to more quickly transition to using the website we created, but also to be more structured in conducting meetings. Sometimes more meetings are needed to get stuff done and it might be necessary since we are attempting so many new things.
  • Retain officers and hold at least 1 event per quarter.
  • More events that appeal to students and alumni members
  • Host an event to bring a larger group of members together
  • Consistency: in emails, in hosting events, and having a regular base of attendees.
  • More members and more participants in events.

  • Stop doing what doesn't work! We have been scheduling monthly events on different days of the week and there's little to no attendance. We're going to pivot (as mentioned above, focusing on student chapters) and see how that goes.
  • Have 50+ active members and hold 2 events (1 networking, 1 community service)
  • We need a full board of elected officers.
  • Increase number of alumni members attending events, and organize more social events with the alumni and the collegiate members. We had a lot of interest in our Bring Your Own Picnic event but many people were on summer vacation so we had low attendance. We want to have a similar event closer to the semester start.

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Make it a practice to remind members to update their contact information after college or have them use a non-school contact for email purposes.
  • I would love to see TBP HQ finding ways to offer shared services and tools that chapters could utilize in a more affordable way.
  • An officer was selected and appointed to run the chapter and bring it back to life but they didn’t have time. I think if chapters go dormant its important to find people willing to do the work to bring it back not just have someone for the sake of calling it alive.
  • Better distributed workload and occasional thank yous for volunteering.

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • I would appreciate a monthly newsletter from HQ with all the relevant alumni chapter business and events which may be of interest. This would help me concisely forward all this information along to members as the secretary. Since all of this currently arrives ad-hoc, I have to be careful about what I choose to forward along in order to keep communication at a reasonable level.

Many of our less active members, don't pay the closest attention to a lot of chapter communications and forwarding everything would only exacerbate the problem.

71

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • I know there was a transition within TBP regarding oversight of Alumni Chapters, but regular communication about updates and action items via email would help keep me organized and on top of the secretarial tasks I need.
  • Help with finding local companies to provide technical tours, assisting with the recruitment of new alumni.
  • When you get contact information from Alumni, ask if they plan to remain in the city of their college. I think this would help with the amount of people we need to email and give a better idea of those more likely to respond.
  • I don't think this is an HQ responsibility. Alumni have to shoulder their responsibility to the organization or renounce membership.

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • As a chapter that doesn't collect dues, we're very limited in the tools we have at our disposal for communicating with our members. We only have $50 in our account, and I am personally covering the cost of our annual dues to HQ each year.
  • Make it easier (cheaper) for Alumni Chapters to send 2 members to Convention.
  • A mailchimp account that could enable us to reach our entire mailing list of >12k members would cost us $200-400 per month. Any other member management tools, or social media management tools are completely outside of our affordable range.
  • TBP could encourage new graduates to find and join an alumni chapter in their area.

  • Early training to the upcoming leadership of the Chapter, I personally had emphasized the training and development of a line of succession. I am sending the next president to the convention, I had provided exposure to the next president with all the student Chapters, from Mizzou, Rolla, St Louis U and Washington U.
  • Improve the TBP website interface for reporting
  • Perhaps TBP could organize some activities in which all the chapters could participate. Maybe these activities could occur via Zoom. We would find it helpful if the chapters could receive some funding from TBP. We would give an accounting of what we did with the funds.
  • Assistance from HQ has been great so far, no feedback to give
  • We struggle to answer this question

74 of 94

Recommendations for TBP to help? (page 6 of 8)

74

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our chapter is also struggling with finances and is unable to sponsor events; it would be great if TBP could sponsor an annual Pi Day event.
  • New Officer training was very good.
  • More clarity/suggestions as to what value TBP can provide to its alumni members, so we can translate that into event ideas.

  • For new officers, host a Q&A session on common challenges and basic procedures in the first five to six months of calendar year.
  • Setup a method for chapter to host a website. Consider offering chapters a small monetary amount to pay for Pi day events.
  • More opportunities for collaboration with other alumni chapters & with District Directors

75

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Not much, our district directors have been incredibly supportive, and our director of alumni affairs has been absolutely fantastic. The work the Alumni Advisory Committee does is also quite excellent.
  • There is nothing TBP can do to change the way our chapter operates. Our main issue is finding meaningful activities to attract our diverse group
  • Not sure. I feel like we have been given very sufficient resources by HQ for us to operate successfully as a chapter without too much help. But I feel like these resources could be organized better, since it was challenging for me to communicate & teach my incoming vice president what a chapter actually is and how it works.

76

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Currently we need to set more events that members will want to attend.
  • Let's agree on what the purpose of the alumni chapters actually is.
  • Hold us more accountable
  • Continue developing personal relationships with the local collegiate chapter members and work personal network to get members to participate. Encourage people to participate as officers or

as part of a committee so that the entire chapter operations does not rest on only 3 people. Not all alumni chapters are the same, and ranking chapters without any fluidity between ranks does not take into account what our chapter is doing. We have had 28 events this year, and a majority of them were supporting our local collegiate chapters.

  • Connecting one chapter with another chapter in a combine event
  • Held our first event in over a year!
  • The joint Pi Day event with the MIT Club received compliments from the attendees.
  • Multiple events and attending district conference
  • Strong turnout (>10) at our Pi Day event
  • Our chapter's greatest achievement this year was hitting our one-year milestone following reactivation. We managed to hit nearly all the key functions, despite being a small chapter that's widely spread out geographically.
  • We have elected some truly exceptional people willing to dedicate their time to help out the Alumni group and be a part of the organization.

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our chapter's greatest achievement this year was gaining a bunch of new members who are active and interested in running events. This increase in membership will hopefully provide us some good forward momentum to continue our growth.
  • We filled all of our officer positions (including Treasurer, which went unfilled in the last two cycles).
  • Sending a voting delegate to convention
  • Attendance at National Convention
  • We revised our bylaws, we elected officers, we are meeting regularly, and we are beginning to have ideas for some activities for our chapter.
  • Attending Student Chapter events and National Convention.
  • Found a repeatable event that many members enjoy doing.

  • We are happy to have a full slate of officers this year. First time in many years that we had a candidate (Professor at UT) for the Vice-President office, and we have a new Director as well.
  • Having more (different) people plan the activities (delegation).
  • Hosted 3 events: Puttshack, resume workshop, and Pi Day
  • Successful turnout for hiking trip
  • Adding 5 new members
  • Establishing clear ties with the collegiate chapter
  • Maintaining 4 officers and holding an event
  • Created “Outstanding Graduating Senior Award” & developed very close relations with Purdue University student & academic leadership both for West Lafayette & Indianapolis
  • One day mentoring event with students at UCF

  • Relaunch and remaining a viable chapter with achievable plans for 2025.
  • Professional Engineering Organization panel virtual event which was attended over 50 attendees across the USA.
  • Getting 1 more person for our board so now we have 4 people.
  • Increase in "active members" (recent graduates)
  • The chapter held more events this year than the previous year (this year = 16 and previous year = 10). The events were diverse including events with local collegiate chapters, escape room and hiking. Additionally, there are more people running for officer positions for 2024-2025 compared to 2023-2024. Those achievements show positive growth for the chapter which will hopefully continue in future years.

  • Did a great event with 30 people in attendance (biggest we have ever done)
  • It got started again
  • Reflecting on the year and coming to the conclusion that we need to do something different than we've been doing.
  • Building good rapport with our collegiate chapters and attending district conference.
  • A very strong, robust, and diverse schedule of events which we delivered on, including attendance at all 10 chapter initiations. We also overhauled our website, and are working to centralize all operations around it.
  • Staying active with all three officer slots filled

  • We were able to attend two of the 3 chapter initiations in our area, we had an on time officer elections, we kept in touch with most of the collegiate chapters and our officers communicate effectively with each other via text, email and calls.
  • Getting our third chapter officer: Tala Jaber. We have three other potential officers that we are working on. This is a measure of our traction efforts.
  • Re-establishing the chapter from being on the verge of inactivity to having a real presence again. Even though we went dark for a few months, I'm so proud of how our small leadership team has brought this chapter! We went from 0 events and a fractured leadership team to having 3 events, double digit attendees for two of the events, and recruiting a new committed officer.

  • 1) Reaching out to the student Chapters in an effective way by participating on regional, social activities with a significant measurable and documented results,
  • 2) Getting the finances in order, funded activities that include the regions engineering schools sponsor by the St Louis Alumni Chapter, our finances are in order we are financially stable in 2025.

  • 3) Reach out to the community in need after the Deadly EF3 Tornado on May 16 that destroy over 1600 homes produce a 1.6 Billion in damages…. We play a key role on a Pro-Bono basis. participation is being on going as our participation is documented. We are in a position of leadership yet discrete and effective dealing with St Louis AIA.

Vision / Goals for Next Year? (page 1 of 6)

84

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our vision is to continue to re-energize the alumni chapter to be more active in community while providing memorable experiences for our members.
  • Bring back our membership and provide value to our alumni community so they keep coming back.
  • To recruit additional alumni to help plan/conduct events.
  • More participating members
  • Our goal for next year is to continue growing our membership and the associated offerings of events.
  • Increase the number of events and collaborate more with collegiate chapters
  • Continue to meet minimum expectations. (I know it's not much of a goal, but it's still a challenge for us.)
  • Two to three in person events
  • More events

Vision / Goals for Next Year? (page 2 of 6)

85

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Our vision for next year is to continue gaining new members and holding periodic events for our members. This will include a goal of us improving our outreach and advertising to the nearby collegiate chapters and alumni who move into the area.
  • Our vision / goal for next year is to get more people to attend our meetings, and to have more activities for our chapter.
  • Offering a benefit of being apart of the Alumni chapter. We are considering trying to find ways such as technical seminars, professional development, interview help, etc. We also plan to have an improved website that would help improve outreach to the Greater Houston area.
  • Better engagement with the Collegiate Chapters -- including EF sessions

87

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Increase STEM impact from grade school through college.
  • Continue the positive growth by holding 24 events in the next year and recruiting even more people to run in officer elections. Ensure that the chapter provides a diversity of events - collegiate chapter support, community service, and networking.
  • Increase our membership retention and facilitate a more professional/social brand.
  • Get member activeness and officers with a common purpose
  • Establish a schedule of events every other month, re-establish relationship with collegiate chapters.
  • Find events/activities to promote an alumni/collegiate relationship
  • More events and get more people to come
  • Don't go inactive
  • Host more events and have additional interest for officers

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • More events, and once we get an established base of attendees, establish an EIN and decide on dues. Officer team not likely to grow beyond the 3 of us anytime soon. We likely won't be able to draw a crowd for a successful members' meeting until we have a regular base of event attendees to meaningfully communicate with. Bonus: try to network to revive the Bluegrass Alumni Chapter in Lexington KY.
  • Completion of the website, transition operations to the website, more structured meetings/events, and an increase in community-oriented (service) events.
  • Recruit more active members, host a big event
  • Recruit more members and have more events.
  • Be more involved with the local student chapters to enhance the TBP experience for student members.

89

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • To connect people
  • Have 75+ active members and hold 4 events (2 networking, 2 community service)
  • Have more members. Set up a bank account etc
  • We would like to have a social event to start school year with the local collegiate chapters and alumni. This is a great way to get networking starting and hopefully get new alumni to show up.
  • Continue building up for a great next year 2026 and culminating in having a strong organization to support the 2027 Convention. Our vision here in St Louis is: The St. Louis Chapter of Tau Beta Pi envisions itself as a dynamic, unifying presence within the greater St. Louis engineering community—bridging professional excellence, academic distinction, and service leadership.

What practices do you have to share? (page 1 of 5)

90

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • Use the concepts from the book Good to Great and use the flywheel method to really carry your group to start growing.
  • The entrepreneurial-themed Pi Day event was a draw. Space was limited to 40 and filled within a few days.
  • I wish I knew
  • One practice we have is for members to meet every month, even in inclement weather because we can meet on Zoom.
  • We have started working with our district director to get in contact with potential members who have either just graduated or have moved into the area. This has been an excellent way to get people involved.

91 of 94

What practices do you have to share? (page 2 of 5)

91

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • We recommend going to every chapter initiation. When your there leave a form asking for their contact information so that you have a actually list of people local to the area and interested in keeping in contact.
  • We publish a newsletter in the Fall, Spring and after elections. It includes articles about our activities - it is easy to read and highlight with GSMAC is doing and fun ways to get involved.
  • Active engagement with students creates a true and lasting rapport. We have seen some traction with this but it is still developing and requires more than a couple of members' engagement to be successful.
  • Attend all initiations, bring sign-up QR Code for next event and/or communication tool (LinkedIn, email, etc)

What practices do you have to share? (page 3 of 5)

92

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • I would stress the following two things to all alumni chapters. First, focus on building personal connection between the membership, especially officers. Without it, interest almost invariably will wane, leading to major issues with continued interest and participation. Second, I would stress the importance of maintaining continuity of events, meetings, and chapter functions in general.

Once broken it's far more difficult to rebuild, seriously impeding and sustained, long term growth.

  • Collab with other District Chapters in the vicinity
  • Willingness of the former chapter president to attend officer meetings.
  • Host events in different locations to appeal to our wide geography. Be very engaged with student chapters and attend initiations when they invite you.

93

Tau Beta Pi – The Engineering Honor Society

  • I cannot emphasize enough that in order to turn this chapter around

1) we developed a clear mission and vision,

2) We have a strong governance,

3) We have a strong strategic planning followed by measurable tactical effort,

4) We engage membership,

5) We are in total legal and financial compliance.

  • I wish I had something to share...
  • In the past 3 years, the district conference has hosted alumni for an alumni panel. There has been great participation & is considered one of the highlights of the conference.
  • Attend convention and attach Collegiate initiations
  • Keep it simple. Host events, advertise them over email blasts to all local alumni, make flyers, take & post pictures, and have a good time.

  • There's a few interesting ones.
    • We have a Director position dedicated to each college in our geographical area as a Liaison
    • Our business meetings are hosted in person (with a hybrid option via zoom) and each month we have a collegiate chapter host. We give each chapter a timeslot in each meeting to discuss their chapter and collaboration opportunities.
  • The past two semesters we have taken the incoming collegiate chapter officers out to dinner at the start of the semester.
