Y7 MidYIS

Parent Information Zoom Presentation

Thursday 28th September 2023

Purpose of assessments

  • KGV is an evidenced based school.
  • We use evidence from assessments, feedback and observations to best support the learning of your child.
  • Each assessment helps us to identify:
    • Areas of strength
    • Areas to support
    • Anomalies in data or transition
  • We do not make decisions based on an individual assessment.
  • However each assessment adds to what we know about your child, and paints a picture of their learning profile.

MidYIS

  • MidYIS (Middle Years Information System) is one of a series of monitoring systems written and administered by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) based at Durham University, England.
  • The test is designed to measure ability and aptitude for learning rather than achievement.
  • This is not a test you can study for and thus students do not need to prepare for the MidYIS test.
  • KGV uses the results as an Predictor of later academic achievement.
  • Students will complete a similar assessment again in Y10 (Yellis) and Y12 (ALIS).

What does it measure?

The one-hour test is divided into four timed sections:

  • Vocabulary
    • (ability to think, learn and communicate with words)
  • Mathematics
    • (ability to think, learn and communicate with numbers)
  • Non-Verbal
    • (ability to think, learn and communicate without words or numbers)
  • Skills
    • (proof reading, organisation, planning, etc.)

Vocab

  • Vocab and Maths are important to the predictions of all subjects.
  • Vocab is used to predict English, History and some Foreign Languages.
  • Most culturally linked of all the scores.
  • Used as a predictor for our Bilingual and Multilingual Language (BML) students.

  • Because the assessment is carried out in English, if a student is less fluent in English than in their first language, the whole assessment may not reflect their true abilities.
    • This is just as important for us to know, so that we can support the student.

Maths

  • Correlated with most subjects but particularly useful for Maths, Statistics, ICT, Design Technology and Economics.
  • There is an emphasis on speed and fluency, rather than knowledge of maths.
  • Like the vocab score, the Maths score is a good predictor of later academic performance.

Non-Verbal

  • Composed of 3 sub-tests
    • Cross Sections
    • Block Counting
    • Pictures
  • Non-verbal is important when predicting Maths, Science, Design and Technology, Geography, Art and Drama
  • It provides a measure of a pupil’s ability in 3-D visualisation, spatial aptitude, pattern recognition and logical thinking.
  • It is helpful for our BML students as it can give us an insight into their developed ability if English in not their first language.

Skills

  • The Skills score is calculated from the Proof Reading and Perceptual Speed and Accuracy (PSA) sections.
  • Proof Reading
    • Asks students to spot mistakes in the spelling, punctuation and grammar of a passage of text.
  • PSA
    • Asks students to look for matches between a sequence of symbols on the left and a number of choices on the right.
    • This is timed.
    • Allows for speed to be demonstrated free from the demands of memory.
