2-minute mindfulness

  • All devices in “do not disturb” (not silent) / quit apps so no stimulus/interruptions
  • Chat will be off, everyone muted
  • Start with 3 very deep breaths…

Goal: focus on 1 thing for 3 minutes.Breathe normally. If you get distracted, just acknowledge that, let go, and begin again.

Counting breaths may help.

Why?

  • Training your mind to focus on the here & now measurably improves performance on high-concentration tasks
  • In experiments with software engineering...
    • Mindfulness group: 10 mins, 4x/week for 4 weeks
    • Control: public speaking, same amount
    • Treatment group had higher semantic expressiveness (i.e. capturing requirements clearly & completely in UML diagrams)
    • …and higher efficiency (SemEx / time)
  • We will post the paper(s) in bCourses

Cue-to-cue: live demo afterthoughts

  • Close team communication is key
    • Slack integration or other way to keep up
    • short-lived branches!
    • Propose merge to “golden repo” as soon as each feature merge is “clean”
  • Consider setting up multiple staging apps
    • Heroku pipelines allow an app per branch
    • keeps “main” deploy clean for customer use
  • Many other “SWE-as-a-service” solutions…
    • CI: GitHub Actions, Heroku CI, Jenkins, Circle
    • Code quality/coverage: Hound, CodeCov, Coveralls
    • Project boards: GitHub Projects, Trello, Basecamp
