Short Story

  • The short story can be defined as ‘a brief prose narrative involving certain characteristic moments in the life of specific people, arranged in a plot sequence so as to create a unified impression of a significant action, mood or quality of life.’
  • More simply it is a prose narrative that contains minimum number of characters and events.
  • The end of the short story is often remarkable as it contributesb to this unified impression in some important way.

Evaluation of Short Story

Identify the narrator of the story.

Identify the point of view . Does the point of view change in the story. If so to what effect.

Try to identify how the point of view helps to shape the theme.

Picturize the background against which we see the characters.

Examine the relation of the setting, to the plot and the characters.

  • Read the story carefully and see how the events are interrelated.
  • Identify the conflicts that appear in the story
  • Evaluate the importance of the element of surprise in the story

  • Identify the characters and their roles.
  • Examine if the characters through their similarities and differences define each other.
  • Identify how do words, actions, dress, setting, narrative and point of view contribute to the characters.
  • To what extent does the character change, and what causes the change?

  • Identify the style of the author. Is it colloquial, formal?
  • Critically examine if the story implies a meaning or several meaning.
  • Identify the significance of the Title.
  • Pay a close attention to the descriptions, dialogues, stylistic variations and connotations
