FathomVerse - Explore the Depths

Background: FathomVerse is a community science game that enables anyone with a mobile device to help researchers discover all life in our ocean. Every year, researchers collect thousands of hours of video, but it’s extremely challenging to analyze and count each animal they observe. By playing FathomVerse, you can view real images from leading research institutions like MBARI and Schmidt Ocean Institute, and label marine life to train AI models that will advance our understanding of ocean ecosystems. Gather a group of ocean lovers to dive in, discover, and learn with FathomVerse!

Event timing and location: 1 hour in a room large enough for your group

Preparation:

1. Gather materials: smartphones or tablets for each participant and connection to the internet.

Set the Stage

• Introduce the concept of citizen science using the definition of citizen science on this slide.
• Have participants create accounts on SciStarter.org and visit our project page!
• Discuss the importance of ocean exploration or watch How AI is Changing Deep Ocean Research
• Have participants download the FathomVerse App. If there are limited devices available, you can share a device and play together!

Dive In

• Open the app and complete the onboarding tutorial.
• Complete 3 dives in ‘training’ mode to get certified to identify an ocean animal.
• Once you’re certified for three animals, you can unlock expeditions, more features, and minigames!

Take Action

• Discuss what you experienced while playing. What animals did you search for and why? What were your favorite finds?
• Check you player stats online at https://dashboard.fathomverse.game to see a snapshot of your contributions and identification skills.
