Last Week’s Sponsor Meeting

  • Onboarding / safety paperwork
  • NDA / Hi-tech honeycomb intellectual property
    • Limited photos of equipment
    • Only certain CAD files can be shared
  • Talked in depth with the operators about machine specs and current setup
    • Different cutters used for each honeycomb cell size
    • Force of cutting changes with cell size, smaller cells require more force
  • Editing Project Scope
    • Dependent on results of risk reduction, rotation will or will not be within project scope
  • Discussed budget and project purchases
    • Sponsor contact requested a bill of materials for the prototype, and they will get back to us after discussing with their supervisors

The Manual Cutting Process

  • Manual cutting steps: table is rotated manually, a zeroing block is used, the angular stop is adjusted, cut is performed, cut is checked with gauge, and repeat.
  • Final piece is checked in gauge block

Risk Reduction Progress

  • Testing work in progress. Force sensors come in tomorrow
  • Tested screw clamp (applied force until part could not rotate → no deformation).
  • Compared rubber and high density foam on clamping face
  • Began building custom clamping mechanism

Risk Reduction Plans

  • Gather load force data to present to sponsor on Thursday

Standard screw clamp

Custom clamp

  • Bring in clamps to sponsor on Thursday to test

Compare to manual operation precision

Goals

3/6:

  • Test custom clamp on production line
  • Bill of materials

3/13:

  • Present final design to director and engineer on site
  • Complete risk reduction tests (vertical screw clamp and prototype “finger” clamp with force sensor)
  • Prototype final design
  • Initial bill of materials drafted for prototype construction
