IB Overview

Standard Level and Higher Level

• HL course = more content 3 part exam
• SL course = less content 2 part exam

-Diploma Candidates complete an Extended Essay in yr. 2

AP English vs IB English

• In AP courses, the AP test = the end of the course for college credit. AP tests are scored out of 5 and colleges want anywhere from a 3 to 5 depending on the major.

• For IB courses, students will take a 2 or 3 part IB exam (SL vs HL) sr. yr.

The IB exam is scored out of 7 and colleges want anywhere from 5 to a 7 depending on the major.

The IB Diploma Program (DP) curriculum is made up of the “DP Core” and six subject groups. The DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.

The three core elements are:

• Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know, full extra class.
• The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
• Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts, requires volunteer hours.

The six subject groups are:

• Studies in language and literature
• Language acquisition
• Individuals and societies
• Sciences
• Mathematics
• The arts

There are different courses within each subject group.
