The olive tree is the symbol of Greece. The Greek Gods Athena and Poseidon both wanted to be guardians of Athens. Whoever gave the city the best gift would become a guardian. Athena gave an olive tree and Poseidon gave water. The olive tree was thought to be more valuable

The ancient Greeks gave the winner of the Ancient Olympic Games an olive wreath.
