Indicators of Future Ready Students

Portrait of a Graduate Milestones

  • Every student will exit grade 3 on grade level in reading; and will exit grade 3 with a grade level understanding of the competencies of the Portrait of a Graduate.
  • Every student will exit grade 5 on grade level in literacy and math; and will exit elementary school able to demonstrate their individual growth within the Portrait of a Graduate competencies.
  • Every student will exit grade 8 able to demonstrate critical thinking that is informed by evidence; and will exit middle school with a high school plan based on their individual strengths and interests; and will be able to demonstrate their individual growth within the Portrait of a Graduate.
  • Every student will graduate with a Future Ready action plan based on their individual strengths and interests; and will be able to demonstrate how they have met the competencies within the Portrait of a Graduate.

Future Ready Students

  • Objective 1.4: Ensure each and every student has regular opportunities to engage in deeper learning with a community and/or work-based focus that informs their future choices.

Meeting Purpose

The purpose of the CTE Industry Partners Advisory Meeting is to ask participants to assist in analyzing our current CTE program. Participants will determine this by:

Reviewing data with regards to the performance of SMUSD CTE students, including special populations, as well as collected self-evaluative programmatic data

Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of SMUSD’s CTE program by career pathway, school site, and district overall

Proposing strategies on how to sustain and scale those strengths and shore up weaknesses

What is CTE?

Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners.

  • In total, about 12.5 million high school and college students are enrolled in CTE across the nation.
  • The high school graduation rate for CTE students is about 90% – 15 percentage points higher than the national average!
  • Standards for Career Ready Practice, describe the fundamental knowledge and skills to help in transitioning to postsecondary education, career training, or the workforce. These standards span all CTE pathways.

Words to Know

Pathway: A sequence of two or more CTE courses within a student's area of career interest. Pathways are designed to connect high school classes to college, industry certifications, and/or a career.

Completers: Students who complete two or more CTE courses in the same pathway, ie. Health Science & Medical Technology, and passed the identified completer course in the pathway with a C- or better.

LMI - Labor Market Information

  • Data about employment provided by respected organizations that detail a region’s demand or lack of for certain occupations, careers, industries, and more.
    • SMUSD’s CTE grant funds are directly connected to San Diego County’s LMI.
    • San Diego’s Current High Priority Sectors are: Advanced Manufacturing, Education and Human Development, Energy-Construction-Utilities, HealthCare, Biotech, Information Technologies, and Public Administration.
