What is the Seal of Biliteracy

  • The Seal of Biliteracy is available for students who are proficient in English, and 1 or more World Languages.

  • Students must demonstrate proficiency in both English (ACT English-min of 18) and a World Language (Intermediate Mid- AAPPL - I2 in 3 of the 4 domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing).

  • Upon meeting the requirements, an electronic Seal of Biliteracy is placed on the student’s transcript. Students will receive a Seal of Biliteracy Certificate at graduation.

What is the Seal of Biliteracy?

    • A celebration of bilingualism and biliteracy
    • An honor for the skills our students attain
    • Evidence of skills for future employers and college admissions offices.
      • Students have the Seal information included on their transcript as well as their resume.

For Graduation

Once test results are in:

  • Applications will be reviewed by the district.

If students qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy:

  • Students will receive an automated email informing them they will receive the Seal Certificate at graduation
  • Student's transcript will have the Seal printed on them.

How to demonstrate the ENGLISH requirement?

The first requirement is to demonstrate English Language Proficiency.

The 2nd requirement is to fulfill World Language Proficiency.

How do students apply?

  1. Once students begin the application process, they have the option to work with a diploma specialist or independently to complete the online application.
  2. On the application form, a window will open and ask students to enter they student ID number.
  3. Students must enter the tests they plan to take for both the English Proficiency Requirement & Language Proficiency Requirement.
  4. Students must sign the form by entering their name in the Student Signature Box at the end of the page.
  5. Finally, to submit the application, students need to make sure to click on ‘Submit’ in order for the District to provide final verification.

How will the Seal of Biliteracy test be administered?

  • Diploma Specialists organize the testing for each HS.
  • Diploma Specialists contact students to let them know the date/time and location.
  • Juniors should plan to start testing their junior year.
  • Cindy Perry will send students login & any testing information needed.

AAPPL tested languages: (varies by year)

  • Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish.

Students will take the Full Test Form B

Who takes which test?

Non-AAPPL tested Languages:

  • Include languages NOT available through AAPPL & not ASL.
  • Will be provided through the CSD State & Federal Programs Department

Format:

Students will be given a choice for the writing prompts.

They will have 45 minutes to write & then present (speaking) their choice of topic (5 to 10 minutes) to a test facilitator of the language.

Who takes which test?

American Sign Language (ASL):

  • Once students have been identified, tests will be ordered
  • In person-testing at the school site
  • Testing may take place at a different time than the other tested languages for the Seal of Biliteracy. The Diploma Specialist will contact students with the details.

Organize/advertise a specific time during the day (A & B day) when students can come and get support to apply for the Seal:

In order to make sure students are excused from classes, Diploma Specialists need to create a permission slip for testing students.

  1. Student name

  3. Where students will be testing
