Homelessness

In 2001, one in 130 people in NZ were homeless. In 2006 that grew to one in 121, and in 2013 it accelerated to one in 102 - more than 41,000 people across New Zealand.

Poverty & Hunger

As many as 28 percent of New Zealand children – about 305,000 – currently live in poverty.

This could mean living in cold, damp, overcrowded houses, not having warm or rain-proof clothing, and many days going hungry. This can result in doing badly at school, not getting a good job, having poor health and falling into a life of crime.

The answer is not necessarily donating food, clothing or money. Sometimes clients of charitable organisations like St Vincent de Paul do not want to take items such as pasta or rice. Why do you think this is?

One in five (19%) New Zealanders aged 15 years or more who drank alcohol in the past year has a potentially hazardous drinking pattern (Ministry of Health, 2013).
3.8% of all global deaths and 4.6% of the global burden of disease (measured in disability-adjusted life-years) are estimated to be attributable to alcohol (Rehm et al 2009).
On an average day: • 52 individuals or groups of people (in NZ) are either driven home or detained in Police custody due to their state of intoxication.

Smoke, Choke, Croak!

Tobacco kills up to half of its users.
Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
Nearly 80% of the world's 1 billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries.

Around 5,000 people die each year in New Zealand because of smoking or second-hand smoke exposure. That's 13 people a day. Internationally, tobacco smoke is responsible for about 1 in 10 adult deaths – about 5 million deaths each year (OECD Factbook).

Māori women have the highest smoking rate at 42% (Māori men 34%).
Smokers are more likely to have poor mental health than non-smokers.
Smokers are more likely to binge drink.
The average age of starting smoking is 14.8 years-old.
18-24 year olds have the highest smoking rate, 24%.
In 2014, the daily smoking rate for 14 and 15-year-olds fell below 3%, the lowest rates ever.44
