Today’s Session

  • Welcome to the combined Eclipse Platform/SDK and Eclipse IDE Working Group meeting.

  • Originally there were to be two separate sessions but the agenda and topics had lots of crossover so we have combined into one.

  • Manoj Palot is here representing the platform session. I will start with an overview of the Eclipse IDE Working Group.

Eclipse IDE Working Group Summary

  • In April 2021, the Eclipse Foundation launched the Eclipse IDE Working Group to focus on the Eclipse IDE and the Eclipse Simultaneous Release (SimRel).

  • The group aims to ensure the continued sustainability, integrity, evolution, and adoption of the Eclipse IDE & RCP suite of products and related technologies.

  • To provide governance, guidance, and funding for the communities that support the delivery of the Eclipse Foundation’s flagship “Eclipse IDE” products.

  • To foster the growth and evolution of the ecosystem including, but not limited to, the Eclipse Marketplace.

  • To create true value for users by developing the platform with a user-centric focus.

Eclipse IDE Working Group Summary

  • The group also provides governance support, resources, and funding for the development of the projects (https://eclipseide.org/projects/) in the simultaneous release, as well as a framework for the resulting products.

  • Drive engagement among organizations and within the community.

  • Make it more attractive for organizations to build products with and for the platform.

  • Improve the user-friendliness of the platform for a better end-user experience.

  • The Eclipse IDE has a very large market share for many domains. The group intends to keep this share and increase it.

Next Steps

  • Now defining the Program Plan for the group for 2023.

  • Key points remain the same as 2022.

  • Our progress is good but so much more can be done!

  • There are a large number items outlined for improvement by the Planning Council. Far more than the budget and resources within the WG today.

  • So, to achieve our objectives we would like to encourage more companies to join or sponsor the WG.
