Scenario:

Apple was recently notified of a malfunction at one of our factories resulting in the accidental discharge of untreated wastewater into a local river. Area residents and environmental groups have begun posting photos on social media of dead fish and discolored water.

The CEO doesn’t want us to “blow this out of proportion” and asks that we do not respond to media inquiries about the incident.

  • Explain to the CEO that minimizing public attention or ignoring media inquiries about incident is NOT in the company’s best interest.
  • Ignoring media inquiries could lead to damaging the company’s credibility.

Recommendation:

  • Issuing a public statement acknowledging the accident.
  • Explain it resulted from unexpected equipment malfunction at one of our facilities.
  • Investigate the malfunction, coordinate with regulators and law enforcement to take immediate action to stop the problem.
  • Corrective actions include: supporting clean up efforts and preventive measures.
