Interview met Hugo de Groot
Zweed of Nederlander?
Hugo de Groot (Delft, April 10, 1583 - Rostock, August 28, 1645) was a Dutch legal scholar and writer. He is also known as (Hugo) Grotius and is sporadically referred to as Huig de Groot in older texts.
During the Twelve Years' Truce (1609-1621), a political and religious conflict escalated in the young Dutch Republic.
Gevangenschap
In 1618, Maurice had his opponents captured. Oldenbarnevelt is sentenced to death by Maurits, De Groot is imprisoned for life in Slot Loevestein, near Gorinchem, where his family joins him.
Een wonderkind?
De Groot is a very smart boy with an incredible memory. When he was eight years old, he wrote poetry in Dutch and Latin. He also translates books in Latin and Greek into Dutch. At the age of eleven he was admitted to the University of Leiden
Opleiding
In addition to Latin and Greek, which he already spoke fluently, he also studied Arabic, Hebrew, French and German.
