Repentance is a mighty change of mind and heart

SCRIPTURE

Matthew 3:1-2 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Luke 3:3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance…

10-11 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12-13 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

- Matthew 3:1-2; Luke 3:3, 8, 10-13

Repentance is a mighty change of mind and heart

Russell M. Nelson

President of the Church

2018 - Present

The word for repentance in the Greek New Testament is metanoeo. The prefix meta- means “change.” The suffix -noeo is related to Greek words that mean “mind,” “knowledge,” “spirit,” and “breath.” Thus, when Jesus asks you and me to “repent,” He is inviting us to change our mind, our knowledge, our spirit—even the way we breathe. He is asking us to change the way we love, think, serve, spend our time, treat our [spouses], teach our children, and even care for our bodies.

…When we choose to repent, we choose to change! We allow the Savior to transform us into the best version of ourselves. We choose to grow spiritually and receive joy—the joy of redemption in Him. When we choose to repent, we choose to become more like Jesus Christ!...prayerfully seek to understand what stands in the way of your repentance. Identify what stops you from repenting. And then, change! Repent! All of us can do better and be better than ever before.

- President Russell M. Nelson, “We Can Do Better and Be Better,”General Conference, April 2019

Repentance(Children's Songbook #98)

MUSIC

“I am sorry” is not always easy to say

When I know I’ve been thoughtless and done something wrong.

I’ll try to repent, to do better, to pray

That Heavenly Father will help me be strong.

Disciples prepare themselves and others to receive Jesus Christ

SCRIPTURE

Mark 3:2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Luke 3:15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

16 John answered, saying unto them all…one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose…

- Mark 3:2-3; Luke 3:15-16, 18

Disciples prepare themselves and others to receive Jesus Christ

Henry B. Eyring

Of the First Presidency

All of us who are under the baptismal covenant have promised to offer the gospel to others…I’ve studied carefully and prayerfully some who are…grateful disciples of the resurrected Jesus Christ. They know for themselves that the Atonement is real and necessary for all. They have felt cleansed through baptism by those in authority and the receipt of the Holy Ghost for themselves. And because of the peace they have experienced, they are like the sons of Mosiah, “desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature…”

…Those who speak easily and often of the restored gospel prize what it has meant to them. They think of that great blessing often. It is the memory of the gift they have received which makes them eager for others to receive it…The Lord trusts His true disciples. He sends prepared people to His prepared servants…Pray for the chance to encounter people who sense there could be something better in their lives. Pray to know what you should do to help them. Your prayers will be answered. You will meet people prepared by the Lord.

I Will Be Valiant(Children’s Songbook #162)

MUSIC

The Lord needs valiant servants,

To do his work in the latter day,

Who follow the teachings of Jesus

And serve his people in a loving way.

I will be his servant

And keep my cov'nants valiantly.

I'll stand for truth. I'll stand for right.

The Lord can depend on me.

Who were the Pharisees and Sadducees?

14 of 33

Who were the Pharisees and Sadducees?

SCRIPTURE

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

9 …think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

- Matthew 3:1, 9-10

Who were the Pharisees and Sadducees?

Bernard P. Brockbank

Assistant to the Council of the Twelve

… Jesus said of the devout, praying Pharisees: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

…The Pharisees, in all of their dedication and their love for God and the ancient prophets and their obedience to man-made righteousness, which appeared to be taken from the scriptures, did not qualify for entrance into the kingdom of heaven. The Pharisees were worshiping a mystical god of spirit, and they were unable to know the living God when he appeared before them. He tried with all of his godly power to convince them, but they would rather defend their man-made church and their man-made doctrines than accept the church and teachings of Jesus Christ.

- Elder Bernard P. Brockbank, “Entrance into the Kingdom of God,”General Conference, October 1972

If I Listen with My Heart(Music for Children)

MUSIC

1. If I had been a little child when Jesus lived on earth,

I would have liked to walk with Him and listen to His words,

But as I search the scriptures I can hear His words of peace

2. I hear a living prophet speak the things that Christ would say

If He were here upon the earth to talk with me today,

The prophet teaches how to live in righteousness and peace

3. I feel the Holy Spirit as he teaches truth and right,

He comforts me in times of need, He testifies of Christ,

He speaks to me in quiet ways that fill my soul with peace

18 of 33

Jesus Christ was baptized to “fulfil all righteousness.”

19 of 33

Jesus Christ was baptized to “fulfil all righteousness.”

SCRIPTURE

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

- Matthew 3:13-15

Jesus Christ was baptized to “fulfil all righteousness.”

Dallin H. Oaks

First counselor in the First Presidency

Those who seek to follow the Savior will understand the importance of the ordinance of baptism. The Lamb without Blemish saw fit to submit himself to baptism by one holding the authority of the priesthood in order to “fulfil all righteousness.” How much more each of us has need of the cleansing and saving power of this ordinance and the other ordinances of the gospel.

As we always remember him, we should strive to assure that we and our family members and, indeed, all the sons and daughters of God everywhere follow our Savior into the waters of baptism. This reminds each of us of our duties to proclaim the gospel, perfect the Saints, and redeem the dead.

Baptism(Children’s Songbook #100)

MUSIC

1. Jesus came to John the Baptist,

In Judea long ago,

And was baptized by immersion

In the River Jordan's flow.

In the kingdom up on high."

3. Now we know that we must also

Witness faith in Jesus' word,

Be baptized to show obedience,

As was Jesus Christ, our Lord.

The Holy Ghost can guide me

24 of 33

The Holy Ghost can guide me

SCRIPTURE

4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

7-8 And preached, saying...I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

The Holy Ghost can guide me

Gary E. Stevenson

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

I invite each of us, especially Primary children, to consider, “How does the Holy Ghost help you?”

…For those of you who are preparing to be baptized and confirmed, those who recently have been, or even those who were a long time ago, it is vital to our physical and spiritual safety that we keep the gift of the Holy Ghost. We begin to do so by striving to keep the commandments, having individual and family prayer, reading the scriptures, and seeking loving and forgiving relationships with family and loved ones. We should keep our thoughts, actions, and language virtuous. We should worship our Heavenly Father in our homes, at church, and, whenever possible, in the holy temple. Stay close to the Spirit, and the Spirit will stay close to you.

- Elder Gary E. Stevenson, “How Does the Holy Ghost Help You?,”General Conference, April 2017

The Still Small Voice(Children’s Songbook #106)

1. Through a still small voice, the Spirit speaks to me

To guide me, to save me from the evil I may see.

If I try to do what’s right, he will lead me thru the night,

Direct me, protect me, and give my soul his light.

Listen, listen. The Holy Ghost will whisper.

Listen, listen to the still small voice.

The members of the Godhead are three separate beings

SCRIPTURE

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

The members of the Godhead are three separate beings

Gordon B. Hinckley

President of the Church

1995 - 2008

I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the eternal, living God. I believe in Him as the Firstborn of the Father and the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. I believe in Him as an individual, separate and distinct from His Father…I believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost…I have no question concerning their reality and their individuality. That individuality was made apparent when Jesus was baptized by John in Jordan. There in the water stood the Son of God. His Father’s voice was heard declaring His divine Sonship, and the Holy Ghost was manifest in the form of a dove.

I am aware that Jesus said that they who had seen Him had seen the Father. Could not the same be said by many a son who resembles his parent? When Jesus prayed to the Father, certainly He was not praying to Himself! They are distinct beings, but they are one in purpose and effort. They are united as one in bringing to pass the grand, divine plan for the salvation and exaltation of the children of God.

- President Gordon B. Hinckley, “The Father, Son and Holy Ghost,”General Conference, October 1986

When Jesus Christ Was Baptized(Children's Songbook #102)

MUSIC

1. When Jesus Christ was baptized

Down in the River Jordan,

Three members of the Godhead

Were present there in love.

The Father spoke from heaven

When Jesus Christ was baptized;

The Holy Ghost descended

As gently as a dove.

2. And now when I am baptized,

I’ll follow his example—

Be baptized by immersion

Through sacred priesthood pow’r.

Then I will be a member

Of Heav’nly Father’s kingdom

And have the Holy Spirit

To guide me ev’ry hour.
