2.2 Internet Router Development in 1980s

  • Initial Internet Development was done with router development
    • Adjust to domestic environment
    • Low-speed router (1200~9600bps) with RS232 serial interface
    • Developers are also network operators and users
  • Later in 1980s
    • 1985 Microprocessor-based Router: Samsung SSM16 with Motorola 68000)
    • 1986 Microprocessor (PC): KAIST(IBM PC/AT Compatible with Intel 386)
    • 1990 Workstation(SUN): KAIST for Link to NSFNET in Hawaii through PACCOM Project

2.3 Internet Router Development in 1980s

  • Router Development was done with Open Source
    • Router is based on UNIX with Kernel driver modification
      • 1982: SNU; UNIX version7m + UNET TCP/IP package with UNIX Kernel modification
      • 1984: KAIST; Attempted to develop SLIP Driver for 4.2 BSD
      • 1986: KAIST; Ethernet Driver development for IBM PC/AT with UNIX V.5
    • Share the experience at USENET netnews group
      • Developed domestic USENET netnewes (han.)
    • Coordinate with Linux Foundation and China/Japan/Korea Open Source activities (90s)

2.4 Internet Router Development – Link to NSFNET

  • Direct Connection to US Internet (‘86)
    • Need File Transfer with NSFNET
    • CSNET IP-over-X.25 Card was used
    • B class IP address 128.134
    • Registered 7 hosts in InterNIC Database(‘86.8.10)
  • Direct Leased-lin NSFNET Connection through U. of Hawaii (PACCOM Project)1990.03.24

3. Issue List

  1. Lack of UNIX Experts
    • We did not have the experts like Bill Joy of BSD
      • UNIX Kernel analysis was popular at Seoul National University and KAIST in early 1980s.
      • Open source activities are not popular even now.
  2. Commercial Internet Router Development
    • Korea was not ready on VLSI chip development unlike CISCO in 1980s.
