Kindergarten - Lesson #1

We Watch

We Listen

We Think

If someone is bothering you, one way you can solve that problem is to ignore them. What is something that bugs you? Can you practice ignoring things that bug you? Look at how Kelso is doing it. He is thinking of something else. Coloring Page

Kindergarten Week #15

This activity uses a visual cue (the turkey) and movement to regulate breath, a core calming skill.

  • How to Do The Calm Down Turkey Breathing:
    1. Explain to the children that when the turkey gets scared or excited, it needs to breathe to calm down.
    2. Hold up the turkey body. Tell the students that for the turkey to get its beautiful feathers, they need to help it breathe calmly.
    3. Lead them through a Calm Breath: "Let's help the turkey! Put your hand on your tummy. Breathe in deep like you are smelling warm apple pie (or a pumpkin pie). Make your tummy big! Breathe out slowly like you are cooling down the hot pie."

  • Sensory Bin - I have a sensory bin in my room that I’m using with some:
    • Leaves
    • Pinecones
    • Acorns
    • Feathers

  • Turkey Tag Freeze Dance
    • One person is the turkey and is it
    • When the music plays everyone dances
    • When the music stops everyone stops
    • “It” is looking for the person who freezes first

Gratitude Scavenger Hunt - Kindergarten

This game turns finding things to be thankful for into a fun, active challenge.

  • Materials: A simple checklist with picture cues or words.
  • Activity:
    1. Give the students a list of things to find around the classroom or playground that they can be thankful for.
    2. Sample Prompts (Use pictures for non-readers):
      • Find something that helps us learn (Book, Marker).
      • Find something that keeps you warm (Sweater, Sunshine through window).
      • Find something that makes you smile (A friend, a funny toy, a picture).
      • Find something from nature (A leaf, a stick).
    3. As they find an item, have them share with a partner or the group why they are thankful for it (e.g., "I am thankful for my pencil because it lets me draw cool pictures!").

Kindergarten Sub Plan #1:

Read No Fits, Nilson!

Connect to SEL by talking about Big vs Small problems. (Kid vs Adult).

What problems have you solved all by yourself? 5 answers.

Play Spot The Difference:

  • All students take 30 second to study the “teaching” side of the bookcase in the middle of the library.
  • Then they close their eyes and cover them with their hands.
  • You move something around or from that bookcase.
  • You say head’s up/eyes open.
  • They then have 5 guesses to guess what is different.
  • If anyone blurts they lose a guess.
  • Only call on those who are using The Vista Way hands.
  • I usually say it this way “heads up, eyes open, 5 guesses, blurts lose a guess, and I’m only calling on Vista Way hands.
  • This game works on focus, self talk, and raising hands.

Optional:

Play Stop/Walk - you will need to explain this game to them:

If you say stop, they walk.

If you say walk, they stop.

This game works on focus, self talk, listening and following directions.

Kindergarten Sub Plan #2:

Read My Mouth Is A Volcano.

Make SEL connection by asking them which Skill for Learning do they use to keep their thoughts in their heads and not blurt? (point to the Self-Talk part on the Skills for Learning poster that is on the whiteboard)

  • Louis describes the feeling in his body when his volcano mouth is about to erupt! How do you and your body feel when you have something very important you want to say but have to wait?
  • Sometimes, like in an emergency, a volcano mouth is expected. Can you think of times when it is okay for our mouth to be a volcano?
  • Practice 3 things you can do when your volcano is about to erupt! (Use poster to help them practice)
  • Practice by doing Think Turn Tell with these:
    • Think - (what is your favorite candy)
    • Turn - (they turn to the person(s) next to them)
    • Tell - (they share with a partner voice)
    • Give them 1 minute and then refocus their attention back to you.
    • Then ask for 3-5 answers. Only call on Vista Way hands and if someone blurts you will not call on them.
    • Repeat as needed to fill time.
    • This practices self-control and self-talk because they have to remember what they we're going to say while waiting their turn. AND it also teaches that not everyone gets a turn every time.

Play My Turn/Your Turn:

  • You say My Turn and do something like clap 3 times, or clapp twice and tap your head.
  • Then you say Your Turn and they mimic you. You can make them wait before you say Your Turn.
  • They are practicing self-control and using their self-talk to help them wait and at the same time remember what they are supposed to do when it is their turn.

Kindergarten Sub Plan #3:

Read

Play 2 Step Directions To Practice Self-Talk - Repeating Instructions In Your Brain is one aspect of this:

  • You give them 2 things to go and do and come back. They are also practicing being silent.
  • You say things like go touch something that is purple and find the letter C.

44 of 45

Kindergarten Sub Plan #4:

Read There Might Be Lobsters (Download a Lesson Plan From TPT - it will cost a little)

Play 2 Listen And Move: You can pull this video up on your phone and plug your phone into the speaker. It has a snake on it and it’s green and yellow. It tells the children to do things like walk, jump, tiptoe, skate, etc. (They do need to run in slow motion)
