Growth Cycles

There are 3 stages of the hair growth cycle;

  • Anagen
  • Catagen
  • Telogen

Each hair follicle is independent and goes through the growth cycle at different times.

Growth Cycles

The first stage is Anagen; ‘The Growth Phase’.

Nourishment of the hair follicle through blood supply enables a hair to grow.

It’s the longest phase and can last between 3 - 5 years! Around 80% of your hair follicles will be in The Anagen Phase

On average, a single hair can grow 1.25cm a month!

Growth Cycles

The second stage is Catagen; ‘The Transition Phase’.

This is when the hair stops growing and detaches itself from the nourishing blood supply.

This is the shortest phase, lasting only 2-3 weeks.

The final stage is Telogen; ‘The Resting Phase’. 10 - 15% of your hair follicles will be in this stage.

The hair goes through a resting period, waiting to shed either due to a new hair growing through or loosened by friction, brushing or the wind.

The cycle then starts all over again, with a new hair growing in the Anagen Phase.

It’s normal to lose between 50-100 hairs a day!

In pregnancy, hormonal changes in the body mean that all hair goes into The Anagen Phase.

In this period of time, hair feels thicker and fuller as less of the hair is shed.

Some people can experience hair loss after their pregnancy once the hormones have balanced and hairs that should have shed go into the Telogen Phase.
