ABC’s Tagline

Bold action for birds across the Americas

  • One-line description that sums up the organization
  • Briefer than our mission statement
  • Combines elements of the mission statement with “bold action” – a defining ABC characteristic

The DNA of ABC

  • BOLD ACTION: Our unstoppable drive for bird conservation results, even when it’s difficult, is the essential element that motivates our organization. We aim to achieve the greatest scale and scope of positive impact possible for birds and their habitats.

  • SCIENCE & EXPERTISE: Science guides our work, pointing the way to the species and habitats most in need – and the best ways to achieve lasting results.

  • RESPONSIBILITY: While birds help people in myriad ways – from pollination and pest control to providing us a sense of wonder – we believe birds have their own inherent value. Beyond their usefulness to humanity, birds are deserving of our care and attention. ABC believes this is our responsibility.

The DNA of ABC

  • INCLUSION & PARTNERSHIP: We work with people, communities, and organizations across the Americas, welcoming everyone who cares about birds. Because inclusion matters – and because it’s the best way to deliver conservation results at the scale birds need. We accomplish more for birds and their habitats – together.
  • WONDER: Inspired by the wonder of birds, ABC works toward a world where birds thrive and where bird extinctions are a thing of the past. Birds surprise and delight us; they motivate us to learn, explore, and connect with others. Birds are not only our business; they’re the beating heart of our organization.

ABC in 100 Words

Indigo Macaws by David Fisher, Neotropical Bird Club

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) takes bold action to conserve wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas.

Inspired by the wonder of birds, we achieve lasting results for the bird species most in need while also benefiting human communities, biodiversity, and the planet’s fragile climate. Our every action is underpinned by science, strengthened by partnerships, and rooted in the belief that diverse perspectives yield stronger results.

Founded as a nonprofit organization in 1994, ABC remains committed to safeguarding birds for generations to come. Join us! Together, we can do more to ensure birds thrive. abcbirds.org

How We Work: Our Strategic Framework

The four objectives that drive our work to conserve birds

Preventing Extinctions

‘I’iwi by Owen Deutsch, owendeutsch.com

The problem:

  • 263 bird species in the Americas and Hawai’i are endangered and at risk of extinction (as of 2023).

ABC solutions:

  • We create and sustain protected areas for endangered and critically endangered species.
  • We control invasive species that threaten endangered species, especially on islands such as in Hawaii.
  • We press for effective legal protection for birds.

Preventing Extinctions:

Short-crested Coquette

Short-crested Coquette by Anthony Lujan

  • Mexico’s Critically Endangered Short-crested Coquette now has protected habitat, thanks to a partnership among ABC, Autonomous University of Guerrero, Mexico’s National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, and local communities.

  • In late 2023, partnerships helped create four protected areas, and two more are expected in 2024. Together, they protect nearly 22,000 acres.
  • The Short-crested Coquette is by far the rarest of the tiny coquette hummingbirds, numbering fewer than 1,000 individuals.

  • The species’ small range in Mexico’s Sierra de Atoyac resulted in the region’s designation as an Alliance for Extinction (AZE) site – a global priority for protection.

Reversing Population Declines

Golden-winged Warbler by Joshua Galicki

The problem:

  • We have lost 3 billion birds from the U.S. and Canada since 1970; 276 U.S. bird species are at risk of becoming endangered.

ABC solutions:

  • We directly implement habitat conservation for the birds of highest concern.
  • We develop and promote best habitat management practices to scale up results in the U.S. and internationally.
  • We work to reduce site-based threats, such as invasive species and collision risk.

Reversing Population Declines:

Grassland Birds

  • Working with landowners and partners, ABC has introduced bird-friendly land management on nearly 262,000 acres of habitat for grassland birds – significant progress toward our goal to improve 2.75 million acres in the Northern Great Plains BirdScape by 2031.

  • Birds benefiting from this work include the North American birds experiencing the steepest declines, including the Long-billed Curlew, Sprague’s Pipit, Baird’s Sparrow, Greater Sage-Grouse, and Thick-billed Longspur.

  • Grassland birds as a group have experienced a 53% percent reduction in population since 1970. Their recovery is an urgent ABC priority.

Reducing Threats to All Birds

The problem:

  • Birds face critical and mounting threats that kill billions of individual birds each year.
  • These threats include habitat loss and degradation, climate change, collisions, toxins, and invasive species.

ABC solutions:

  • ABC programs are making steady progress to reduce threats to birds through advocacy, funding, technological solutions, and (when necessary) legal action.

Reducing Threats to All Birds: Pesticides

ABC-led coalitions recently drove passage of two state pesticide bills related to neonicotinoids, or neonics – pesticides known to be deadly to birds and reduce vital insect prey:

  • Vermont banned the use of neonicotinoid-coated seeds that directly poison birds and pollute the environment.

  • In California, seeds treated with pesticides must now be labeled with their chemical components in order to be sold in the state. As a result, farmers will have clear information about any substance that could be poisonous to people and wild birds.

Building the Bird Conservation Movement

The problem:

  • The scale of society’s response lags behind the scale of the bird crisis and we need more people, more funding, and more awareness of the issue to solve it.

ABC solutions:

  • We support the science and capacity needed to deliver effective bird conservation.
  • We work to ensure bird conservation is welcoming to all.
  • In all that we do, we work to build, encourage, and celebrate the bird conservation community across the Americas.

Building the Bird Conservation Movement: Reserve Stewardship

LARSI provided fire-fighting equipment to partner IMD in Brazil.

  • In 2023, the Latin American Reserve Stewardship Initiative (LARSI), a project of ABC and March Conservation Fund, assisted 10 ABC partner organizations in South America and the Caribbean with efforts to improve the management and financial sustainability of reserves that protect endangered birds.

  • Activities supported included development of tourism infrastructure at the Bosque de las Nubes Reserve in the Dominican Republic and delivery of new vehicles to enable our Colombian partners to more easily patrol and manage bird reserves.

  • Over nine years, LARSI awarded more than $2.9 million to help partners ensure the sustainability of their bird reserves.

ABC Results by the Numbers

3,000 BIRD SPECIES: An ABC-supported network of protected areas provides habitat for 30 percent of the world’s bird species.

1.1 MILLION ACRES of habitat are protected for some of the world’s most endangered birds. These 100+ reserves span 15 countries, supported by ABC and managed by 59 on-the-ground partners.

7.7 MILLION TREES and shrubs have been planted with ABC support in priority habitats from the U.S. to Peru, resulting in improved habitat for birds and a range of benefits to people, from carbon sequestration to water conservation.

9.3 MILLION ACRES have been improved for birds through partnerships with the Migratory Bird Joint Ventures (JVs) and ABC, focusing on declining species and conserving the vast landscapes they need across their full life cycles.

15 TOXIC CHEMICALS that kill birds, poison habitats, and reduce birds’ insect prey have been canceled or restricted in use, thanks to advocacy and outreach by ABC, partners, and other groups.

24 STATES AND MUNICIPALITIES now have bird-friendly building guidelines in place across the U.S. — a testament to work by ABC’s Collisions team and other advocates.
