Welcome to Discrete Mathematics!

Period 4

What is Discrete Math?

  • Discrete Mathematics is not the same as Discreet Mathematics!!!!!
  • Discrete Mathematics versus Continuous Mathematics
    • If I could possibly use every single real number without missing any, then the math you are studying is CONTINUOUS.
      • Algebra
      • Trigonometry
      • Calculus
      • Some Statistical Work
    • If your intention is to restrict to just positive integers or just rational numbers, then the math your are studying is DISCRETE.

What is Discrete Math?

  • Application Based
  • Not always dependent on complex algebraic procedures.
  • Not old, most of the material we will cover was discovered in the last century or even the last decade!
  • Mirrors a liberal arts college math course for Non-Math Majors.

What is Discrete Math?

  • Management Science
    • How can a mailman determine a route to use when delivering his packages?
    • How is that problem different from the determining the route for plowing the roads after a bad snow storm?
    • How can I determine a schedule for several interdependent parts of a large task?
    • How can I work “Connect the Dots” into a serious math course?

What is Discrete Math?

  • The Mathematics of Social Choice
    • Is it possible to run a fair election if everyone has an equal say?
    • What does “fair” mean in the first place?
    • If not everyone has an equal say, can we measure someone’s relative power?
    • If I have stuff to give out, is there a fair way for me to determine who gets what?
