1. What is Transitional Kindergarten?

It is a developmentally appropriate program that partners with families to expose students to the Preschool-Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations through an engaging and play-based learning environment.
The TK program is designed as a bridge between preschool and Kindergarten for any child turning four by September 1st.
It gives young learners a head start and provides them with an opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is tailored to meet their academic and social needs.
Research shows that students who attend a program prior to Kindergarten are more likely to do well in school and go on to college.
Students attend daily. See your school’s specific schedule.

What do TK students learn?

Time is dedicated throughout the TK day for students to have choice within the classroom where they want to explore in order to develop independence and agency: “Choice is voice.”
Time is also dedicated for early learners to be exposed to the Preschool-Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF)- described as developmentally appropriate standards that fall within the domains of:

Approaches to Learning
Social Emotional Development
Language & Literacy Development
Mathematics
Science
Physical Development
Health
History/Social Studies
Visual and Performing Arts

Skills to practice with your child in order to be ready for Transitional Kindergarten

Self-care: dressing, opening food containers and using the restroom

Classroom aides will support students with toileting independence.

Communicating needs (asking for help)
Being able to focus on an adult reading a story
Being able to take turns and share
Understanding how to put materials away when done with a project

2. An introduction to Kindergarten

Students that turn 5 on or before September 1st enroll in Kindergarten.
Instruction is based on the Common Core State Standards.
Students attend daily for four hours in either an early bird or late bird schedule.

Skills to practice with your child in order to be ready for Kindergarten

Self-care: dressing, opening food containers and using the restroom
Communicating needs (asking for help)
Being able to focus on an adult reading a story
Being able to take turns and share
Understanding how to put materials away when done with a project
Be familiar with holding a crayon or pencil for drawing and writing
Be familiar with using scissors and glue for projects
Be familiar with naming colors, shapes, letters and numbers *

*Note that students do not need to have

mastered these skills prior to Kindergarten.

You will learn more from your school principal and teachers about your child’s program when you attend the TK/K Orientation .

Please check with the office where you register your child for the date and time of the orientation.
