Tamariki and whānau

It’s time to switch on your imagination and create …

Len Lye style flip books

Len Lye style flip book

Len Lye was crazy about movement, energy and colour.

We’ll use some of his ‘direct film’ stencil techniques to make a flip book.

You can watch Len Lye’s film A Colour Box (next page) as inspiration for your flip book. Len Lye made this film in 1935 when sound and colour film technology were only a few years old.

What shapes do you recognise?

How does the movie make you feel?

You will need

  • a note pad eg. Post-it, small note book, or old school exercise book
  • a pencil, coloured pencils or felt pens
  • various household objects with holes/slits to use as stencils eg. fork, fish slice, potato masher

Choose one simple movement

bounce

turn

go sideways

grow

You’ll draw the same shape many times to trick people that it’s moving - that’s the trick called animation.

Use a stencil to draw your shape on the first page of the notepad.

On the second page of the notepad, draw the same shape but slightly moved down or to one side or turned or made bigger.

Continue to draw your shape on each individual page of the notepad. Each time slightly move the stencil.

After about 20 pages, flip through the notepad to test your drawing sequence.

Any improvements?

Keep drawing. Change stencils and colours. Overlap new shapes that move differently.

Finished!

Now practise flipping your pages to get smooth movement and watch your drawing come to life.

Turn your flip book over and flick in the opposite direction – what changes?

What sound could you add with your voice?
