Understanding AI Capabilities and Limitations�Before you start using a Gen AI tool, you first need to understand AI’s capabilities and limitations.

Recognize what AI can offer, such as personalized learning, data analytics, and administrative task automation, idea generation, etc. For ex: you can have it build you a personal fitness plan for three months. Or it can create a whole curriculum for you for leadership development.
With its many benefits, you also need to recognize it is NOT a human. It may sound ilke a human in some cases, but it is not.
Finally, consider data quality: Be aware that datasets used by AI can be outdated and sometimes, inaccurate. These tools can act as people-pleasers. They want to answer your question, and they have been known to not only make up answers but also make up SOURCES. For ex: a Manhattan lawyer submitted a federal court filing citing at least six cases that DID NOT EXIST. He even asked ChatGPT if the cases were real and ChatGPT said YES. When you hear people say “garbage in, garbage out” this is what they are referring to.

Data Privacy and Security

How many of you are completely restricted from using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot? Your organization likely has a policy in place around AI usage. Unpopular opinion: they’re not wrong to restrict it — at least for now. In the early days of chatgpt, employees were using the tool to summarize meeting notes. Seems safe, right? Not so much .The meeting was about company financials, so alllll of that data went into chatgpt and was now readily accessible by its competitors. So when your company is restricting its use, it’s because of the immense damage that can be done by making one mistake of a copy/paste in the name of efficiency.

Compliance: Ensure AI applications comply with data protection regulations like GDPR or CCPA. OUr company is building a conversational AI tool for healthcare systems, so we are preparing to do more compliance training for our employees in July on Personal Health Information (PHI) or Personal Identifiable Information (PII)
Security Measures: Implement robust security protocols to safeguard sensitive learner data.
Data Usage: Clearly communicate how data is collected, used, and stored to build trust with users.
Basically, this section is: use common sense. Don’t put sensitive company or personal data into ChatGPT.

Ethical Considerations�Humans are inherently biased. And humans are building the resource library for these tools to source from. So, as with anything created by humans, bias is expected — even though it’s an AI that’s delivering it. There’s a great example of this from a documentary called Coded Bias, an exploration into the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Dr. Joy Buolamwini's discovery of racial bias in facial recognition algorithms. Brene Brown interviews Dr. B in her latest Dare to Lead podcast season.

Consider Bias and Fairness: Actively work to identify and mitigate biases in AI algorithms.

Check your sources!

Transparency: Maintain transparency about AI processes and decisions to foster trust.

Taking accountability if the gen AI content you’re getting is fallible.
Disclosing if a gen AI tool was used to generate content or plans.
LIke with any recommendations we make, be ready to “show your work” if you need to.

Fair Treatment: Ensure AI tools treat all learners equitably and do not reinforce existing inequalities.

This is sort of holding the AI tools accountable, providing feedback to the companies that are making them, using those thumbs up thumbs down when they provided responses, etc.

Conducting efficient research on learning topics.
Generating engaging visuals for your learning materials.
