  • According to World Health Organization, 15 couples out of 100 are not be able to conceive within the first year of unprotected sex. While PEW Research Center from USA claims that about 1 in 7 couples are infertile and 20-35% of couples fail to conceive within 6 months, and approximately 15% of couples fail to conceive within 12 months. WHO defines the infertility as “the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse”, or just 6 months if the women is over 35.
  • Among the couples going through fertility treatment, the infertility rate for men was 20% thirty years ago and now it’s %45. And 75% of male infertility is due to sperm disorders.
  • For western men, sperm count has declined %59 while sperm concentration has 52% drop in the last forty years. On average, sperm count is dropping 1% every year, with no evidence of levelling off.
  • A recent study of 2,500 Swiss men between the ages of 18 and 22 found that almost two thirds (62%) had one or more factors below the normal ranges.
  • According to a study, among the couples presenting for fertility evaluation %27 of men do not have sperm testing due to various reasons. Beside of social norms, they refuse going through clinical experience for fertility testing.
  • A 2008 study comparing SA results from men who collected at home versus in the laboratory found that men collecting at home had higher sperm concentration, total sperm count, and progressive motility (5). A 2014 study had similar findings, with home-collection samples having larger volumes (4.0 vs. 4.9 mL), sperm concentration (41 vs. 64 million/mL), and progressive sperm motility (40 vs. 52%)
  • The studies show that 40% of couple who are going through IVF (in-vitro-fertilization) treatment relate the issue to men, %40 to women, and the rest relates the issue to both or unexplained cases.
