The DoDEA Professional Learning Communities Guidance is clear in its expectations regarding the use of Focused Collaboration time. The guide states:

“Time allocated for PLCs is sacred to the work of the team and should not be used for any other purpose. This Guidance also serves as the means for professional development and resources to support the PLCs” (Department of Defense Educational Activity, Teaching and Learning Branch, 2016).

The guide also outlines that “ Additional focus for PLC work comes through using essential questions, such as: What we want our students to know and be able to do; How will we know if students have learned; What will we do if student are not learning or already know the learning (Department of Defense Educational Activity, Teaching and Learning Branch, 2016).

However, when examining the results of the internal review visits from the 2018-2019 school year, Focused Collaboration time is being used for the following purposes:

Professional Development

School committees focused on areas such as community outreach, Continuous School Improvement, and School Quality Factors

Team meetings not centered on the work of a professional learning community

School meetings where summative data is reviewed

School administrators need to be reminded of the expectations for Focused Collaboration.

Focused Collaboration time is for teacher teams to work on answering the four essential questions of a professional learning community:

What do we want our students to know and be able to do?

How will we know when they have learned it?

What will we do when they haven’t learned it?

What will we do to extend the learning when they already know it?

During Focused Collaboration time, schools will not:

Utilize Focused Collaboration for professional development as professional learning is embedded in the professional learning community inquiry cycle

Engage in committee work

Have faculty, staff, or other meetings
