What is Science Olympiad?

Science Olympiad is a national STEM competition in which students in groups of 2-3 people compete in various events.

All SRHS members get to attend Regional level competition. Based on our school’s ranking, we may move onto State level competition, in which only 15 students from our club move on to compete based on their individual placements.

How does competition work?

Preparation:

  • Everyone will be given 3-4 events along with 1-2 partners (depending on the event)
  • Science Olympiad is mostly self-studied (meaning we won’t have classes every week like Marshall)
  • Many resources such as study materials and binders will be provided by us, but it is up to you to use them!
  • You have around 6 months of preparation time

New Resource Closet!

The main resource closet has been moved to the soundproof area by Lewis’s room for easy access

  • We have many textbooks, binders, and other study materials in the cabinets!
    • Use this form to check resources in and out for borrowing
  • The larger build materials have been moved to a room by Lewis’s room that requires a key
    • Ask Mr. Lewis or any of the officers to borrow these materials!

Types of Events

  • Study
    • This type of event requires studying material given on the event guidelines and taking a written test at competition
    • You may bring either a cheat sheet or binder depending on rules for the event
  • Lab
  • This type of event requires conducting a lab/performing analysis at competition based on event guidelines
  • Build
    • This type of event requires building a device to accomplish a specific task (again based on event guidelines) DURING your preparation time

Competition Day

  • Regionals will be held mid-March at USD
  • For study/lab events: you will be given a proctored exam/lab as per event guidelines
    • Some events may be online, but computers will be provided
  • For build events: your device will be impounded in the morning and demonstrated later on in the day
    • These are the only types of events that don’t require written exam portions (for the most part), so all the work will be done before competition

Teams/Team Assignments

  • After looking through all of the event descriptions, we will provide a form through which you can indicate which events you want as well as which partner(s) you want
    • We will try our best to give you your top event choices/partners, but do note that you may end up with someone you don’t know for some of your events - if this is the case, make sure to get into contact with your partner rather than meeting each other at competition for the first time
  • TOP TEAM! We will hold a vote at our meeting next week to decide when to hold top team tryouts!

Access to Rules Manual

  • WE ARE DIVISION C!
  • If researching online about events, SciOly Wiki is a good place to learn more

Note: The rules attached here are from last year (just to give you a general idea!). The rules for this year will be released on the 9/3!
