Tie Breaking Procedures for Sweet 16

2 Way Tie

Because all matches are played to completion - all 2 Way Ties will be broken using the Head to Head result between the 2 teams.

3 Way Tie

The Rationale for taking the time to play a third game during pool play in the Sweet 16 was to eliminate all tie breaking games at the end of the Round Robin play.

After passing the motion, there was not a definitive 3 Way Tie Breaking format in place that paired with our new Round Robin format.

To that end, to break all 3 Way Ties, we will defer to the OVA format to be used in this order.

Once you enter the 3 Way Tie Breaking Format, continue through the sequence to determine the placing of the 3 teams involved.

Head to head results are no longer applicable.

  1. The team having the best RATIO of SETS WON/LOST among the TIED teams will be ranked higher
  2. The team having the best RATIO of SETS WON/LOST among ALL matches in the round will be ranked higher
  3. The team having the best RATIO of POINT FOR/AGAINST among the TIED teams will be ranked higher
  4. The team having the best RATIO of POINTS FOR/AGAINST among ALL matches played will be ranked higher
  5. A coin toss – it never comes to this.

All Point and Set RATIOS are calculated using DIVISION

Please Note: Under this format teams COULD be eliminated based on the Set/Point Ratio above. SEE NEXT SLIDE

TIE BREAKING PROCEDURE

18 of 18

D.E.A.A / O.V.A. Rules Modifications

- The libero rule is NOT applicable at any level of DEAA play.

- Any ball played Below the Waist (unintentionally or intentionally) is to be considered a Dead Ball

- There will be TWO timeouts per game of 60 seconds each (except a third game where there will only be two timeouts of 30 seconds)

- Sidearm serving is permitted at the junior level of play with the following provision:

The hand must make contact with the ball below the elbow, and the elbow is below the shoulder.

- If a player touches the net and IS NOT part of the play, there will be NO net call.

However, if a player touches the net (top or bottom) and IS part of the play, a net call WILL BE made.

  • NEW FOR 2023 - A ball hitting the ceiling or an overhead obstruction (lights, fan, or basketball hoop lying horizontally) above a playable area shall remain in play provided the ball contacts the ceiling or obstruction on the side of the net that is occupied by the team that last played the ball. This rule does not apply if the object (basketball net, etc.) prevents the ball from hitting the wall and ricochets a ball back into play. This rule is only in effect after the first and/or second hit by a team. The ball is not allowed to contact the roof and then go over the net.
