Workshop objective:
Latinx Workshop aims to empower middle school girls within the Latinx community by fostering pride in their heritage, celebrating their cultural identity, and amplifying the untold histories of Latinas. Through interactive discussions, storytelling, and creative activities, the workshop will provide a brave space for the girls to explore and express their unique experiences, learn about influential Latinas throughout history, and understand the importance of their voices in shaping the future. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of their cultural roots, develop confidence in sharing their stories, and feel inspired to continue honoring and preserving the Latinx legacy.

Glenview Middle School is 25% Latino student population with only 4 Latina teachers. In the fall of 2021 Latinx Workshop kicked off and it’s been unapologetically
Latinx ever since!
Latinx Workshop members refused to remain silent when in fall 2021 there was a large presence of sexual harassment at school. They posted signs in Spanish and English.
Session 4 Rompiendo el Silencio included a tour of Northwestern University + a self-defense class taught by Latinx instructors.
The members also had an opportunity to meet Dr. Alyssa Garcia whose course, Latinx Feminisms, inspired Latinx Workshop!
All of our members are children of immigrants + 1st generation college bound students.
Session 9 Breaking Barriers was completed in partnership with Latinx students from Augustana College in Rock Island, Il.
Our middle school Latinx students were able to see themselves reflected in college students.
It was a powerful day for all!
Our members wrapped up our 1st year by taking on leadership roles in their classes including being project managers for the end-of-year marble building maze math project.
They won 1st place!
Session 10 Giving Back to Our Community – The members raised funds to address period poverty at Glenview Middle School. Members applied what they had learned from community leaders as well as Latinx leaders they had studied in Session 8 Nuestras Antepasadxs to lead out this community service project. They have been very successful!
Latinx Workshop has addressed the school board on the importance of supporting Latinx Workshop. They proudly wore this T-shirt. They were joined by their mamás, community leaders and superintendent.
