CHAPTER 1: JOSHUA TALKS TO GOD

  • The Lord reminds Joshua of the land promised to Moses, and too not forget his law.
  • Joshua commands the Israelites that they will cross the Jordan in three days.
  • Joshua reminds the Reubenites and Gadites.

CHAPTER 2: RAHAB AND THE SPIES

  • Joshua sends two spies into the promised land, specifically Jericho.
  • While in Jericho the spies stay with a prostitute named Rahab who hides them from the locals.
  • Rahab believes they are meant to rule the land, so the spies tell her to put a scarlet cord on her window so when they enter the land she will be protected.
  • Rahab then helps them escape, and the spies return to Joshua.

CHAPTER 3: THE ISRAELITES REACH THE JORDAN

  • Joshua and the Israelites march to Jordan river where they camp.
  • Joshua instructs the Israelites that the Lord will stop the flow of the Jordan river so they can cross, and this is how they will know the Lord is with them.
  • Joshua instructs the priests to enter the river Jordan while carrying the Ark of the covenant. When their feet touch the water’s edge, the flow of the water stops.

CHAPTER 4: THE ISRAELITES CROSS THE JORDAN

  • All the Israelites cross the Jordan river.
  • The Israelites set up a monument to document crossing the Jordan river.

CHAPTER 5: CIRCUMCISION

  • After hearing of the Israelites crossing, the Canaanite and Amorite Kings are scared of the Israelites.
  • The Lord instructs Joshua to circumcise the Israelites.

CHAPTER 6: THE FALL OF JERICHO

  • The entrances in Jericho are shut because of the Israelites.
  • The Lord instruct Moses to have the army led by seven priests with the ark of the covenant march around the city of Jericho once a day, for six days. On the 7th day march around the city 7 times and sound trumpet and shout and then the walls of Jericho will fall down.
  • When the walls fall the Israelites enter, and plunder the gold and silver, and burn the city down.

CHAPTER 7: ISRAEL LOSES FAVOR

  • Joshua sends spies to Ai to scout the land. They come back and tell Joshua a small force can take it. Joshua sends a small force but they are defeated.
  • Joshua cries out to God why this has happened. The Lord replies one of the Israelites stole when they were plundering Jericho.
  • Joshua then searches the Israelites until an Israelite named Achin confessed.
  • The Israelites then stoned Achin.

CHAPTER 8: AI DESTROYED

  • The Lord commands Joshua to attack Ai.
  • Joshua sends a group of troops at night to hide and ambush Ai from the backside while they attack from the front.
  • The next day the Israelites attack from the front and draw the troops of Ai out. The Israelites then retreat and the troops of Ai follow. At this point the Israelites hiding behind the city ambush Ai and burn it to the ground.
  • On Mt. Ebal Joshua builds an altar for the Lord, and makes another copy of the Laws of Moses.

CHAPTER 9: GIBEONITE TREATY

  • The Gibeonites a neighboring people of the Israelites heard of the Israelites military success and how they intended to conquer all of the surrounding areas, so they sought to make a treaty with the Israelites through deception.
  • They traveled to the Israelites and pretended they were people from a foreign land and convinced the Israelites to make a treaty with them and that they would be their servants. The Israelites accepted.
  • A few days later the Israelites found out they had been deceived, and confronted the Gibeonites. The Gibeonites told they deceived them because they feared them. The Israel spared them because they had made a vow to the Lord.

CHAPTER 10: CONQUEST

  • 5 Kings of surrounding states had heard what had happened to the Gibeonites, so they decided to attack the Gibeonites.
  • The Gibeonites called on Joshua for help, and Joshua responded.
  • Joshua destroyed the Kings and their armies, and their cities. The Lord helped sending down hailstones on them.

CHAPTER 11: NORTHERN KINGS DEFEATED

  • Various other Kings north of Jericho gathered armies and rallied against Joshua, they were all defeated.

  • List of defeated kings by Moses and Joshua.

CHAPTER 13: LAND DIVIDED

  • The Lord informs Joshua that there is still land to be taken, and to remember to divide it between the tribes.
  • Land is divided between the tribes of the Reubenites, the Gadites, Manasseh.

CHAPTER 14: LAND DIVIDED

  • Land divided to Ephraim.
  • Land divided to Caleb.

CHAPTER 15: LAND DIVIDED

  • Land distributed to the tribe of Judah.

CHAPTER 16: LAND DIVIDED

  • Land is distributed to the tribes of Ephraim one of the sons of Joseph.

CHAPTER 17: LAND IS DIVIDED

  • Land is distributed to the tribes of Manasseh who were descendants of the other son of Joseph.

CHAPTER 18: LAND DIVIDED

  • Joshua informs the Israelites there is still more land to be divided.
  • Land alotted to Benjamin.

CHAPTER 19: LAND DIVIDED

  • Land allotted to Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, Dan, and Joshua.

CHAPTER 20: CITIES OF REFUGE

  • Joshua establishes cities of refuge for Israelites who killed someone unintentionally.

CHAPTER 21: TOWNS FOR THE LEVITES

  • Joshua establishes town for the Levites.

CHAPTER 22: EASTERN TRIBES RETURN HOME

  • Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and Manasseh from the east. Joshua commended them on their faith, and blessed them and then sent them home.
  • When the Reubenites, Gadites and Mannasseh got home they built an altar near the Jordan river. When the rest of the tribes heard of this they became angry and desired to go to war with them.
  • When the war party reached the Eastern Tribes they had an assembly and the Eastern tribes explained that this altar was for the Lord, and it was strictly a replica of the Lords altar to remind the other tribes that eastern tribes were part of Israel.
  • The other tribes that formed the war found this to be reasonable.

CHAPTER 23: JOSHUA’S FAREWELL

  • Joshua reminds the Israelites not to forget the commandments and make sure not to intermingle with other nations.

25 of 25

CHAPTER 24: JOSHUA DIES

  • Joshua reminds the Israelites of all that has happened to them, and remind them to fear God and builds an altar as a reminder not to serve other Gods.
  • Then Joshua dies.
