Color

Choose a single still frame from the film. Analyze Anderson’s use of color. How does he use color to influence mood and create atmosphere? What feelings do you get when you look at this image as a whole? Why? Analyze it in terms of both setting and character.

The color palette, which is comprised largely of earth tones gives this image, and the film itself, an organic feel. It reminds us that the film is about the animal world, even though the story is a very human one. The yellows and oranges are reminiscent of a sunrise/sunset, providing a pervasive sense of change. This is a moment where Fox finds out his life is about to change dramatically, Mrs. Fox is pregnant. The yellow/orange/brown color palette is an extremely autumnal one. A time when crops are harvested, the seeds we’ve sewn bear sustenance. Autumn too is a time of change. It is time for fox to contemplate change. But like Autumn, we often aren’t ready for the cold reality of winter that follows. Change is hard!

Commentary

According to the article you read pre-viewing: “A comment on modern-day consumerism, meanwhile, can be seen in the contradictory central character in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Mr Fox (George Clooney), who wears designer trousers and discusses interest rates and housing prices is, at his core, a common red fox constantly at odds with his nature. He laments, ‘How can a fox ever be happy without (forgive the expression) a chicken in its teeth?’ Choose a moment from the film that highlights his contradictory nature and examine it!
