UninSHured: Uninsured Immigrants’ Social & Health Care Use

An estimated 500,000 people in Canada do not have legal immigration status, and many lack provincial health insurance. The UninSHured Project will examine how uninsured immigrants access, delay, or avoid health and social care.

Using a mixed-methods design, the study will include:

  • Linked Ontario CHC and ICES data
  • Comparisons between uninsured immigrants, insured immigrants, and long-term residents
  • Approximately 30 interviews with uninsured immigrants

The research will explore structural barriers, cultural influences, relationships, and trust.
