(1) Easier Access to Drought and Climate Information and Data Sources – This project will compile and produce readily accessible, relevant, and understandable summaries of drought and climate data addressing specific management needs. These customized results will be provided for each for each management area, and maintained on a centralized website so that managers will have a single site to visit that will contain all drought-related information and data sources.

(2) Better and More Comprehensive Information – This project will synthesize existing information while supporting research collaborations that focus on documented needs of resource managers with the goal of better connecting users to data, maps and trend analyses.

(3) Improved Technical Assistance – We will produce “translated” science summaries and offer “hands-on” training opportunities, including decision support tools to help managers prioritize management actions and better understand outcomes are inadequately supported. Other suggestions include: a data-base of Hawai‘i-specific or otherwise relevant technical research; coordinated sharing and access to relevant equipment (e.g., stream gauges, weather stations); expanded training opportunities (e.g., webinars, workshops); web-based ‘Ask an expert’ service; and drought-focused Best Management Practices.

(4) More Collaborative Information Transfer Environment – This project seeks to improve communication mechanisms and a feedback process between scientists and managers to share new information. Potential mechanisms for information transfer could include: 1) web-based tools and regular meetings, symposia and workshop; 2) facilitated transfer of science and information that directly addresses management and policy needs; 3) organized information by responsibility area (e.g., land management, policy, climate science); and 4) created opportunities for one-on-one practitioner-researcher exchanges to better address issue or site- specific needs. Other opportunities could include: targeted list-serves for drought related water science topic areas; web-based and facilitated discussion boards; targeted symposia at workshops and conferences; list of Hawai‘i drought partners, areas of expertise, and resources; and interactive maps showing study sites, key research findings, available extension and outreach products, and points of contact.
