There are three factors that determine whether or not location is good.

Accuracy and Precision

A location point should give you the latitude and longitude of the device. We constantly strive to be the most accurate and precise.

This is important because when we return a location, you expect it to be that location.

Usefulness

Location alone is useful, but adding context like venue name, category like restaurant, bar or coffee shop, city, state and zip, the ability to geofence, to build personas – these make location more useful, the ability to trigger an event or mode when someone walks into a venue

Ownership

What is ownership?

Ownership means that the data you capture is YOUR data.

For example: Some 1^st party location networks (like Google) provide app developers free location services. Apps make tons of location requests. The location network can then use this valuable location data to build personas that they can use to monetize their own advertising platforms and to sell to anyone, including the apps’ competitors. Skyhook does not do this.

You can optimize your device experience by delivering location with low power consumption and the fastest time-to-first-fix by combining all available data sources: Wi-Fi, IP, GPS, cell tower and device sensors.

The way we do this is with our Hybrid Location: Our patented algorithm, refined over 10 years, combines location beacons from GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular connections dynamically based on the strength and recency of each of those signals, as well as movement of the device.

Included in our patent algorithms are certain methods that make our location both accurate and precise, such as:

Tiling: Our location network discovered and positioned over one billion geolocated access points, organized neatly into tiles that can be downloaded locally. Our Precision Location SDK intelligently combines real-time device scan data with locally stored data to reduce response time and resource usage.

Clustering: Skyhook’s system uses spatiotemporal clustering techniques to filter out “noisy,” inaccurate signals to obtain the most accurate location available.

Similar techniques are used to identify beacons that exhibit “pathological behaviors” and remove them from influencing the positioning.

Filtering: We isolate all types of unreliable data points, such as those sourced from Mi-Fi hotspots or access points that cover large areas, and prevent them from corrupting our system.

Minimal Power Consumption: Skyhook uses Wi-Fi scans devices are already performing, thereby minimizing additional power and CPU usage.

Fitness apps often track activity levels but do not append location to activity data collected by wearable devices that do not have GPS.

Pre-load Location Tiles

With Precision Location, wearable accessories can preload tiles of geolocated Wi-Fi networks, and use passive Wi-Fi scans to locate devices offline.

Enable Location Tagging

Skyhook uses passive Wi-Fi scans to detect nearby geolocated Wi-Fi networks, store them and reconcile them to locations for geotagging running routes once the device is connected to a network, tagging behaviors with locations in real time.
