Essential Letters and Sounds

We have daily letters and sounds sessions to teach the children phonics. The sounds are taught quickly and need lots of consolidation and practise. The order the sounds are taught in are:

�Prompts for Reading

�As you read……

  • Give lots of praise – never criticise
  • Allow a few seconds for your child to work a word out (not too long)
  • Think about the prompt you give
  • Encourage your child to make it sound like talking “ “

�Asking Questions

  • Literal – your child will be able to find the answer from what he/she has read
  • Inferential – your child will have to read between the lines and interpret the answer for themselves

�Talking about the book

  • Talk about favourite parts of the story and parts they did not enjoy – giving reasons
  • Retell the main parts of the story in order.
  • Talk about the characters, setting etc, link to feelings, thoughts and actions.

Other Things You Can Do To Help

  • Allow your child to play games linked to reading on the computer.
  • Play listening games to encourage your child to hear the sounds in words
  • Promote reading for enjoyment
  • Use magnetic /foam letters to encourage blending and segmenting

  • Return your child’s reading and library books to school every Wednesday
  • Think carefully about the prompts that you use
  • Male role-models for the boys!
  • Play games with the harder to read words
  • Encourage you child to use Letterjoin to consolidate sound formation
