Addressing Socioeconomic Barriers

Recognizing that socioeconomic factors significantly impact attendance, the district is:

  • Connecting families with resources for housing and food.
  • Providing wraparound services through school-based supports and community liaisons.
  • Reconnecting Youth Coordinator focus to families that reflect our most intensive chronic attendance

School-Based Attendance Teams

  • Schools have attendance teams that monitor student attendance, conduct outreach, and work with families on personalized plans to improve attendance.

Reevaluating School Schedules

  • Creating soft starts which benefits students facing transportation challenges, caregiving responsibilities at home or mental health concerns like anxiety.

Building Relationships

  • Strong, positive relationships between staff and students foster trust and belonging, making students feel valued and understood, which directly encourages consistent attendance.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

  • Collaborating with culturally specific organizations like Latino Network, Self Enhancement Inc. (SEI), Elevate, and SUN School to provide support systems for families facing barriers to attendance.
  • Working with our Mental Health Providers to support provide on-site counseling and therapy services.
  • Working with DHS Coach that help support families who frequently miss school.

Using ParentSquare for Attendance Initiatives

  • ParentSquare is being leveraged to enhance family communication around attendance, including automated messages, reminders, and direct engagement with families of students who frequently miss school.

Strong Instructional Focus

  • We aim to prioritizing engaging, interactive lessons with student choice, voice, cognitive hooks, and feedback motivates students, increasing regular attendance.

  • Strengthen consistency in attendance interventions and practices district-wide, ensuring all schools implement strategies effectively and equitably.

2. Early Identification and Intervention

  • Improve systems for early identification of at-risk students, allowing faster, more proactive support before attendance problems escalate.

3. Family Engagement

  • Expand intentional, culturally responsive outreach to families, building trust and ensuring they feel supported rather than penalized for attendance issues.

4. Staff Training

  • Provide ongoing professional development for all staff in trauma-informed care, mental health awareness, and culturally responsive practices to better address root causes of absenteeism.

5. Explore Transportation Solutions

  • Address transportation barriers through innovative solutions like transportation partnerships, walking buses, or carpool networks, especially for economically disadvantaged students.

6. Expanded Mental Health Services

  • Increase capacity and access to mental health providers to address growing mental health concerns, especially with cultural specific providers.
