Some Happy Surprises!

“We were able to meet students' needs much better than we have in previous years. Smaller classes and more remote learning was helpful to many students that were having behavior issues in the past.”

Jeff Beaudreau, Peoples Academy

And Perseverance!

“It was a challenging year with remote teaching, in person teaching, closing, reopening, cleaning, masking, managing high levels of stress and anxiety within our community but we were able to persevere. We are a strong community and when pushed to the limits we showed that ‘we got this.’”

Parish Eiskamp, Blue Mountain School

Equity at the CENTER

VTPBIS Commitment to Equity

Following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others, and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, the BEST/VTPBIS State Team has become acutely aware of our responsibility to interrupt racism by disrupting and addressing issues of inequity, hate, and bias in schools. We honor the lives and contributions of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color and acknowledge the painful history and ongoing impact of colonialism, enslavement, discrimination, and injustice. We are committed to centering equity and justice within our work.

We acknowledge that when implementing PBIS without fidelity and without intentionally centering equity, unintended acts of oppression and harm can occur. VTPBIS is diligently engaged in strengthening and transforming our systems and practices to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion to achieve equitable outcomes for all students.

“The practice of greeting each student with their family curbside in the morning, with students being greeted again upon entering the school and again when entering their classroom

set a very positive tone to start the day.

A dramatic increase in positive student recognition with our token system (Stars) contributed to an increase in positive school climate, individual student well being and a decrease in problem

behaviors.”

Mary Dolan, Killington Elementary School

Why VTPBIS SU/SD Coordinators?

Research shows that one of the greatest predictors of sustainability is:

  • District administration actively supports PBIS (e.g., describes SWPBIS as a top priority, provides clear direction) and embeds into school and/or district policy (e.g., action plansschool improvement plans, mission/vision statements)

(Mathews, S., McIntosh, K., Frank, J. L., & May, S. (2014))

Why VTPBIS School Coordinators?

  • The VTPBIS School Coordinator is the ultimate “cheerleader” and advocate for PBIS at the building level
  • Provides technical assistance and support to the leadership team and school staff to improve implementation of the components of PBIS
