Who is a person (or a group of people) you’ve personally known whom you’ve always appreciated? Why did you appreciate this person or group of people?
TAKE 5-10 MINUTES TO DISCUSS.
Let’s read “poem where no one is deported” by José Olivarez.
When we’re done, let’s briefly discuss whom the speaker praises and how he goes about doing so.
Choose somebody (or a group of people) from your past whom you greatly appreciate, for a variety of reasons. Then try to identify, in as much detail as possible, the different “things” that they did which exemplify the reasons why you appreciate them so much.
Take 5-10 minutes to brainstorm.

Today, write a poem similar in sentiment to José Olivarez’s “poem where no one is deported” and express your appreciation toward a person or group of people whom you have known.
APPRECIATION
In the poem, the speaker reflects upon not just one, but many different reasons why he appreciates his mother and his larger community. In your poem, try not to focus on just one specific characteristic or trait; try to identify a myriad of reasons why this person (or group of people) are so special and important to you.
