  • Once upon a time there lived a shepherd. He had never been to school or learnt to read and write because there were very few schools in those days. But he was very

wise and understood people’s sorrows and troubles. Many people

came to him for advice. Soon he became famous.

The king of the country heard about him, and thought of meeting him. Disguised as a shepherd, one day the king came to the

place where he lived. The shepherd rose to welcome him. He took

the tired traveller inside and gave him his share of food. The king was impressed by

his hospitality and wise conversation. In the

morning he thanked the shepherd and went back to his palace.

  • The king was surprised as well as pleased to meet him. He appointed the shepherd the governor of a small district. The shepherd remained as humble as ever.

People loved him for his

wisdom, sympathy and goodness. His fame as fair and wise governor spread throughout the country.

  • Now the governors of other provinces grew jealous of him and began

to talk to the king against him. They said that he was dishonest and kept a part of money that he collected as tax from the people.

He always carried an iron chest in which he carried that treasure.

  • At first the king did not believe what they reported. But he could no longer ignore them. One thing was clear that the shepherd always carried the iron chest with him all the time. So the shepherd was summoned to the palace.

  • On the appointed day, the shepherd came riding the camel. Everyone was delighted to see the iron chest with him. The king was angry and asked what that iron chest contained. Everyone in the palace was

eagerly waiting to see. But when they opened it ................ No gold

or silver or jewels were there. But an old blanket was found.

  • The king asked the shepherd why he always carried such an old blanket. To which the shepherd replied with great dignity that this common blanket was my oldest friend, it would

always protect him if the king would take away the new cloaks. The king was pleased and embarrassed. He made him the governor

of a much bigger district.
