EKYOOTO FOR WATER BY LOTUS FLOWER - UGANDA

IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH IN BUSIRIBA SUB COUNTY, KYAKARAFA TOWNCOUNCIL, 1 & 2 VILLAGES, KAMWENGE DISTRICT A HIGHLY WATER STRESS DISTRICT.

14 of 40

KEY FINDINGS AND SOLUTIONS

  • A snap shot study was done in kyakarafa town council, 1 & 2 villages in Busiriba subcounty a highly water stressed area that hosts over 150 households. Of the 4 protected water sources only 1 is functional and yet dwindling.
  • The 3 none functional water sources were due to mechanical breakdown, planting of water draining tree species – eucalyptus tress and a one that stopped functioning after pouring pale yellow and sticky water 10 years ago.
  • The only functional water source was terribly dwindling and struggling to survive due to maintaince and sustainability challenges.
  • The community members resorted to using open dug wells that were also poorly maintained,
  • using a people centered approach, together with the water user committee members, community members, leaders, and district officials we held a series of ‘Ekyooto’ around these water sources where we discussed the maintaince challenges, emphasized the urgent need to sustainably use the water sources and practically participated in cleaning the dwindling water source.
  • We held a water user committee meeting of all water user committee members emphasizing the need to conserve, protect and use the existing water sources sustainably.
  • we designed a water conservation toolkit clearly indicating the communally identified challenges, agreed upon solutions and actions to improve water and sanitation in Busiriba sub county.
  • We supported the community in functionalizing the water source that required mechanical attention. The water source that had dried due to eucalyptus trees is now functional since we advised the community members remove the trees.

Clean Drinking Water for People of Ravi

Situational CHALLENGE: The local community was facing a terrible situation regarding the water quality. This village is based on the bank of river Ravi which was highly contaminated with industrial and municipal wastewater and also solid waste. People had been facing severe kinds of waterborne diseases which in some cases led to their death. People of this community were much marginalized, and their socioeconomic profile was also very low. The basic source of income is agriculture & and livestock.

The village has 450 households with approximately 2800/3000 beneficiaries including children, women, men, marginalized, and youth. After the implementation of this project, we shall try to scale up/ replicate the same project in other nearby communities. However, after the modification in the project activities with the consultation of the mentor and SWP, It was decided to install a deep handpump in the village to ensure access to safe drinking water for the local communities.

  • Mrs. Nuzhat and her team developed her team, kicked off the project in the local community, and conducted community meetings.
  • Focus Group Discussion including youth, women and religious leaders, and senior citizens about the importance of clean water, water conservation, and health impacts.
  • Menstruation Hygiene Management (MHM) sessions.
  • Establishment of the Local Village WOMEN Water User Committee, Youth water leaders, and senior citizen committees
  • The identification, verification, and finalization point of installation of the Handpump by the consent and collective consensus of the local community.
  • The local community landowner is willing to provide a piece of land for the installation of this hand pump on the corner of the village, which is equal in distance, reachable, accessible, affordable, and acceptable to all the community members.
  • Installation of the 120 feet depth handpump for the provision of safe drinking water to the local community.
