What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud Computing:

  • Your information is being saved on your computer but also “off” of your computer.
  • Backs up your files.
  • Enables you to retrieve your files from multiple locations and platforms, i.e. Apple vs. Microsoft, phones, tablets, etc.

  • Organization of dept. materials
    • Easy to add, edit, and organize.
  • Common platform with easy access
    • Macs, PC’s, Smartphones, and tablets
    • Internet Explorer/Chrome/ Safari
    • “Platform agnostic”
  • Allows multiple users to collaborate in a document in real time.
    • Designed for speed and collaboration
    • Comments and revisions are trackable
    • Eliminates “versioning”
    • Documents are in the cloud and always backed up.

What is Chrome? Why Should I Log In To It?

Chrome is the Gold Standard:

  • Chrome is a web browser--how you can reach the internet. Similar to Firefox and Explorer.
  • It’s free, secure, easy to use, easy to organize, and has lots of options.
  • You can sync your bookmarks, passwords, and extensions across multiple devices.
  • It fully supports G Suite products.

Am I Logged Into Chrome?

Look at the Top of your Laptop:

  • Look up in the top right corner, next to the minimizer. If your name is there, you are logged in. Do nothing.
  • If your name is not there, click on the “person” or little empty head and sign in using your frhsd account.
  • When asked, you want to “Link Data” if you are on a device that only you use.

Look at the Top of your internet page.

  • If your picture or a circle with your initial is there, you are logged in..
  • Mouse over the circle--does your frhsd.com email show? If yes, than you are logged in. If a personal gmail account comes up, you need to switch to your frhsd account and remove the personal account.

  • There are Google Apps that are comparable to the standard Microsoft platform:
    • OneDrive → Google Drive
    • Excel → Google Sheets
    • Word → Google Docs
    • PowerPoint → Google Slides
    • Microsoft Teams → Google Classroom
    • Microsoft Sharepoint → Google Sites
    • Skype for Business → Google Hangouts
    • OneNote → Google Keep

Organize With Folders

Create and Name A New Folder

  • Click on blue “New” button and choose “Folder”
  • A box will appear to name your folder.
  • Click “create”

  • Decide what permissions you want for that folder.

Sharing permissions set at the folder level applies to everything in that folder

  • Permissions can be changed within individual files
  • Different people can have different permissions

Find the “AdminGooglePractice11918” that we shared with you.

Open the folder.

Find the document called “Questions and Reflection”.

Leave a question, comment, or reflection in the document.

Create or Open a Google Doc

Name a Google Doc

  • Create a title for your practice document as the first line.
  • Remember that Google Docs saves all of your work so if you close this without naming it, it will save as “Untitled Document”.
  • Click in the upper left hand corner where it says “Untitled document” and will automatically change to the first line that you have typed.
  • You can rename it to whatever you would like though.

Link Sharing Documents with Others

  • Top Right of Document - Click ‘Share’
  • The default is “Everyone in FRHSD can view” but this can be changed in many ways.
  • Click the arrow and then “more” for more options.

What is Google Classroom?

  • Web service for schools that makes it easier for students, educators, or parents to connect inside or outside of school
  • Classroom is an option for administrators if you would like to work with you departments
  • Allows educators to integrate G-Suite tools seamlessly (Docs, Sheets, Slides etc.) in their work with students

Creating or Joining a Classroom

  • Navigate to the Google “waffle” and select Classroom
  • To create click on + and create class
  • 2 ways to join a classroom
    • If invited via email, click Accept
    • Click + , Click Join class and enter class code

    • Assignments - asking for a submission
    • Quiz Assignment - creates a Google Form Quiz
    • Question - multiple choice or short answer question
    • Material - documents to view with no due date
    • Reuse Post - repost a previously created post
    • Topic - created headers to organize your Classwork page

Classroom People

    • Add teachers or students
    • Actions dropdown- email, remove or mute students
    • Invite guardians - provides daily or weekly updates via email

Note: Once a guardian is invited in Classroom, the guardian will receive updates from all Classrooms the student is a member of if turned on.

    • Grades tab will pull all “Assignments” from the Classwork tab
    • You can return assignments and view submission history of assignments
