  • Athlete number assigned randomly.
  • Athlete rack location marked with placard.
  • Bikes racked by the seat nose pointing toward flow of traffic.
  • Gear on bike, behind front wheel of bike or in Transition Bin.
  • Once racked in Transition, bike may not be removed �until competion begins.

Swim Course – 750M (1 lap)

  • In water start.
  • Clockwise – 1 Lap (buoys on right, except last buoy will be on the left).
  • Athletes receive swim cap and chip in race packet (after briefing).
  • Line up on the beach in numerical order then make your way to our position between the buoys
  • “On Your Mark!” - Air horn starts race
  • Water temperature: 57˚F (Friday 6am)

  • Counterclockwise direction

  • Athletes stay on island until all laps complete, then return to Transition.

Uniform & Aero Bars

  • Uniform must cover torso.

  • Sleeves are not allowed.

  • Clip-on aero are NO LONGER ALLOWED in Draft-Legal racing.

Swim Equipment

  • Swim caps & timing chips will be in your race packet.
  • Wet suits are forbidden if �the water temperature is 68˚F (20˚C) or higher.

  • Wet suits are mandatory if the temperature is 60.62˚F (15.9˚C)
  • Water and air temperature will be taken 1 hour prior to the race start.

  • Helmets must be approved by a testing authority which is recognized by any national federation that is an affiliate of World Triathlon.
  • Clearly labeled by the manufacturer as satisfying such standards (original sticker in place).
  • Chin straps snug against chin.

Parking and Park Rules

  • Park North of San Diego Mission Bay Resort – street and lot parking available
  • No smoking/vaping
  • No glass bottles

  • No alcohol
  • No littering
  • No dogs after 9am. Please do not bring a dog. All dogs + owners will be removed at 9am sharp

Athlete ID & Body Marking

  • All athletes will be assigned �a race number. Numbers are assigned in.
  • A bike frame number and helmet number will be provided at packet pick-up, held immediately after the mandatory pre-race briefing.

  • Athletes will be body marked with markers or temporary tattoos.
  • Every athlete must wear a timing chip/strap distributed in your packet that you are picking up today.

Race Day Check In

  • Athletes should arrive �with body, bike and helmet numbering properly �applied at visible.
  • Timing chip on ankle.
  • Officials will review each athlete’s body marking and bike and helmet.

Transition (Race Start)

  • Only registered athletes allowed in Transition area.
  • Athletes rack bike at �assigned position.
  • Once in Transition, bikes cannot be removed until competition begins.

  • Only equipment to be used during competition can be left in Transition.
  • Equipment (shoes, helmet, etc.) must be contained directly on, under or �behind bike.
  • Marking Transition spot �is not allowed.

Swim Start (in water)

  • Athletes will be called �to the start by race number and name.
  • Once called to the start �athletes will swim out and select a position behind the start buoys in the water.
  • Official start command is �“On Your Marks” followed �by a horn blast.

Swim to Bike Transition (T1)

  • Swim gear (swim cap, goggles, wet suit) must be placed in the athlete’s assigned bin/Transition basket.

  • Helmet on and buckled before touching your bike.

Bike

  • Athlete may not ride their bike in the Transition area (Mount/Dismount Line).
  • No official wheel pit.

  • Athletes about to be overtaken/passed �by the first-place athlete on the bike will be lapped out.
  • Official will show the �athlete a red card and �say “Athlete “#” you are overtaken/lapped out.”
  • Athletes must move to the side of the road and stop.
  • Athletes must walk bike �back to Transition off the course/on the sidewalk and not interfere with the race.
  • Lapped athletes are disqualified from the race.
  • Disqualification cannot�be protested.

Bike to Run Transition (T2)

  • Bikes must be racked by:
    • Both handlebars/�brake levers.
    • Front of seat (facing either direction.

  • All equipment/gear must be placed in the athlete’s assigned Transition bin/basket.

  • There will be a run course bike leader for the first runner.

  • Water and/or sports drink will be provided at an aid station(s) on the course.

Rules of Competition

  • The official rule set for the competition is the USA Triathlon Multisport Competition Rules which can be found at www.usatriathlon.org.
  • USAT Draft Legal Equipment and Rules Checklist can also �be found at www.usatriathlon.org.
  • It is the athlete’s, coaches, parent’s responsibility to know �the rules.
  • Questions about rules should be brought up prior to the competition, or to Officials when checking in to Transition.

Penalties

    • Warning – Verbal warning by Official to correct an issue �during competition.
    • Time Penalty – :10 second penalty served in Transition, �on the spot, or at the Penalty Box on the run course.
  • Disqualification (Red Card):
    • Athletes shown a Red Card by an Official are disqualified.
    • Athletes who receive the Red Card may complete the �race, except for those athletes who are lapped out.

  • Missing Athlete Check-in (DSQ).
  • Early start on swim (:10).�False start on swim (Restart).

  • Must make forward �motion at swim start (:10).
  • Blocking or interfering with the progress of another competitor (:10).

Overview of Penalties

  • By the time the athlete leaves T2 all gear must be in athlete’s Transition Bin (:10).
  • Helmet must be buckled when touching bike (:10).
  • Mounting your bike before the mount line or dismounting your bike after the dismount line (:10).
  • Must follow prescribed course / correct lap count (:10 or DSQ).
        • Unsportsmanlike �conduct (DSQ).

Penalty Box

  • Penalties not served in Transtion will be served in Penalty Box.
  • Penalty Box located on the road approx. 200m before �Finish Line on the run course.
  • Race number and penalty code will be written on white �board at Penalty Box.

Serving Your Penalty

  • Procedure:
    • Identify yourself;
    • Official will start timing penalty;
    • Must remain in Penalty Box entire time;
    • May not receive any outside assistance while �serving penalty;
    • Official will let you know when your time is served.

Protest:

  • Protest:
    • Athlete may file a Protest with Head Referee provided it has not been previously observed and ruled upon by Officials.
    • Protest is filed against the conduct of an athlete, an athlete’s equipment, an Official, or the conditions of �the competition.

Protest:

Generally, Protests must follow these steps:

  1. Notify Head Referee of intent to submit a Protest within 5 minutes of finish time.
  2. Head Referee will provide appropriate form for athlete �to complete.
  3. The completed Protest form must be submitted �to Head Referee no more than 15 minutes after the athlete’s finish time accompanied by $50 in cash or check.

  • Protests are reviewed by the Lead Official and the Competition Jury.
  • All decisions on Protests are final.

Timing, Results & Awards

  • The competition is won by the athlete who has the shortest time from the start signal to the moment when the athlete’s torso crosses the Finish Line.
  • Results will be provided – including splits for swimming, T1, bike, T2, running, and the overall time.
  • Awards will be presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each division.

Exceptional Conditions

  • The following race formats may be considered due to exceptional conditions or inclement weather:
    • Duathlon, aquathlon, or a two-segment competition…swim/run, bike/run or run/bike.
    • Time trial starts may be allowed.
    • Preferred option will be a duathlon with the �shorter run first.
    • Rules for the replacement event will be followed.
