Watsonville Brillante is a public art project
Over a period of 5 years the entire downtown parking garage will be covered with mosaics. When our county is back in the Red Tier for COVID-19 anyone can go to the Muzzio to learn how to make mosaics.

Juan Fuentes
The vertical sections of the garage are mosaic interpretations of the work of Juan Fuentes. Juan Fuentes grew up in Watsonville and graduated from Watsonville High School in 1969. He is a famous artist now, and even though he is living in San Francisco he still has family in Watsonville and loves our town very much.

Las secciones verticales del garaje son interpretaciones en mosaico de la obra de Juan Fuentes. Juan Fuentes creció en Watsonville y se graduó de Watsonville High School en 1969. Ahora es un artista famoso y, aunque vive en San Francisco, todavía tiene familia en Watsonville y ama mucho a nuestra ciudad.

Your art could be next!
The horizontal sections of the garage are going to represent the different cultures of all the people who live in Watsonville. And the organizers of the project want to get the artwork of as many local artists on the wall as possible.
Up to 80 designs will be used and will earn $100. Each artist may have up to 5 designs selected.
There is no age limit. And no limit on the number of entries. Artists must reside within 10 miles of Watsonville (i.e. Freedom, Pajaro, Aromas, Royal Oaks, etc)

You will need to choose a culture to illustrate.
Go to the link below, choose a culture and fill in your name. Please choose a culture that is part of your heritage. If you are from a mixed heritage you are welcome to submit multiple drawings.

What next?
For each culture you choose to illustrate you can do 2 drawings.
One that is a pattern and one that is a symbol.
The pattern will need to be in a rectangle that is 3 times as long as it is wide.
The symbol will need to fit into a square format.

Do NOT electronically copy and paste an image and call it yours, you may use images as reference for drawings.
Include the URL for any images that you used for reference in your final submission.

Cultural Symbols:
Every culture has symbols, some are more well known and obvious than others.
Watsonville is a great example of how a google image search is probably not enough. The obvious symbol for Watsonville is the strawberry, but the google image search on symbols for Watsonville did not come up with a strawberry, and had the images to the right instead:
If possible it may help to talk to someone from the country you chose.

Evolution from research to finished public art:
The artist contacted the local living Ohlones with her design. They liked the border, but asked her to use an image they provided for the center. This image was used because it respected the aesthetics of the people it represents.
Image found on internet, led to the border pattern.
Initial research showed that acorns and strawberries were staple foods for the local Ohlone Indian tribe.

Submitting Your Work:
Once you have completed your drawing(s) you will submit them electronically to: watsonvillebrillante@gmail.com
Include: Your Name, the culture(s) you are representing, and links to any photo references.
There is no age limit, and no limit on the number of submissions. Artists must reside within 10 mile radius of Watsonville. (Freedom, Pajaro, Aromas, Royal Oaks, etc)
Semi Finalists images will be put before the community for a vote.
Finalists will be approved by the Arts Commission & receive a $100 stipend.
Submission due date: February 10
