What is NCEA?

National Certificate of Educational Achievement

The main qualification that students in New Zealand work towards

Highly regarded by Universities, employers and recognised internationally

Three levels, plus Scholarship

Year 11 – Level 1
Year 12 – Level 2
Year 13 – Level 3, University Entrance, Scholarship

Standards assess a particular area of knowledge or skill

Each standard has credits attached to it (2-12)

So, what do I need to pass?

NCEA Level 1

60 credits from any level

Meet the numeracy corequisite requirement

Meet the literacy corequisite requirement

These skills can be assessed in English or in te reo Māori.

60 credits at Level 2 or above

Literacy and Numeracy corequisites

Students will need to have achieved Numeracy and Literacy credits before they are able to be awarded NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3.

They can re-sit it as many times as they need (up to twice a year)

They only need to achieve it once.

May be sat from Year 10

Alternative Literacy and Numeracy Pathways

Additional ways for students to achieve the literacy and numeracy requirement:

10 credits in literacy and 10 credits numeracy from a range of standards in English, Mathematics, and a small number of standards in the Social Sciences, Science and Commerce at Level 1

If students use this pathway, the credits gained will not contribute to the 60 credits required to pass NCEA at any level.

Pass NCEA Level 3 Including:

14 credits at Level 3 or higher in each of three subjects from an “approved list”

Meet the Numeracy corequisite

5 “Reading” + 5 “Writing” credits at Level 2 or higher in English and/or Literacy subjects

Scholarship

Monetary award to recognise top secondary school students.

Scholarship exams are externally assessed and are an additional set of exams.

Do not attract credits, or contribute towards a qualification, appears on their Record of Achievement.

Students can qualify to have their certificate endorsed with Merit or Excellence
