Your Role as a Library Volunteer

Assist with Check-ins/Checkouts

Reshelve Books (Big part of maintaining the library)

Encourage and Help students find books

Help with the upkeep of the Library

Class Visits

Classes come once a week for 30 minutes

5th Graders come every other week

Grades TK-1 check out 1 book per week

Grades 2-5 check out 2 books per week

Books need to be returned weekly to check out new ones.

Books can be renewed by bringing them in and placing it in the renewal basket with student’s name

Schedule

Volunteers should schedule with the teacher or myself the days they want to volunteer.
Please arrive 5 minutes prior to class.
Most volunteers help on the day their child’s class visits the library.
If you are unable to volunteer on that designated day/time you may schedule another time to help out.
All help is truly appreciated!

There is a new system to volunteer this year, so please check with the office.

Everybody Picture - (E) Books with less text and more pictures intended for younger children
Everybody Chapter -(EC) Chapter books for emerging readers usually grades 1-3
Fiction:(F) Fantasy, Historical, Mystery, Realistic chapter books organized by genre intended for grades 3-5
Graphic Novels -(GN) Comic style books intended for grades 3-5
Graphic Novels (GN EC)Comic style books intended for grades K-2
Paperback Series (PB)- Series in paperback for grades 3-5
Series (F)- Hardcover Series for grades 3-5

Biography - (921 name of person) True stories about individuals
Reference - (Ref) Books intended to look at only in the library
Non Fiction (dewey # first three letters of author’s last name)

A few things to remember:

Children in Tk and K are asked to stay in the Everybody Picture book Area
Only one book per series for checkout
Only one graphic novel per checkout
Books with an orange dot on the spine are meant for 3-5 grades
Please change due date for a 5th grade for a 2 week checkout

Library Day

Children come in and sit in the read aloud area on the colored rug and listen to the story
Volunteers can help check-in books at this time
Students who have forgotten their book at home are reminded to bring it back and can look at books but not check out
Students are then allowed to check out books
There may be an added activity that should be set up on tables
Students Line up to check out books using their library card

Check in procedures

Books will be in the return bin under the counter or in the classroom bookcart/bin
Make sure you are on the check-in screen under the circulation heading
Scan John Baldwin barcode on the back of the book
Check to see if book was properly scanned and that no notes pop up
Place book on return cart in designated section

Check out Procedures

Make sure you are in the check-out screen under the circulation heading
Scan student’s library card and then scan the John Baldwin barcode on the back of the book
Make sure screen matches student’s card
Make sure student does not have any outstanding books
Stamp book/ or student will stamp due date him/herself
