“FS: U.S. Church Records …”

- In The Value of … read and discuss the first paragraph.

- In Types of Church Records and Additional Church Records briefly review the bullet points and the list of church records.

- In Determining the Church … briefly review the main bullet points for resources that may identify an ancestor’s church.

- Scroll down to A General Historical Chart … and briefly review each of the column headings. You may need to scroll right to see the entire chart. Explain how this chart can help you determine what types of church records may be relevant for your ancestors.

“AF: Researching Church Records …”

- In Look in Areas … read and discuss the first paragraph. Then review the first sentence or two in the next two paragraphs to discuss church records in the 1700’s.

- In Look at Patterns … briefly summarize each of the two paragraphs for tips about immigrants and churches.

- In What Will You Find … review and briefly discuss the items in the bullet list for types of information commonly found in church records.

- In Don’t Overlook … summarize and discuss the information in the first half of the paragraph. Emphasize that church newsletters can provide additional research clues.

- In Baptism and Christening Records summarize the first and third paragraphs, and the first few sentences in the fourth paragraph.

- In Marriage Records summarize the first two sentences in the first and third paragraphs.

- In Death and Burial Records briefly scan the numbered list to show examples of the expanded information often available in church records. Then summarize the last two paragraphs of the section and discuss the value of eulogies for genealogical information.

- In Membership Records summarize and discuss the first paragraph.

- In Other Types of Records scroll through the headings (down to “Local Publications”) and mention a brief item of interest about each of the record types included.

- Open the link for Church Records Search Suggestions and mention that these are useful tips for locating ancestors’ church records.

- Watch the video from 2:10 to 3:14 and review the types of information that may be included in Protestant records, in addition to baptisms.

- Watch the entire video (this focuses more on Protestant denominations). Pause and add commentary as needed.

- Read the entire paragraph just above Identifying Your Ancestors’ Church. Add commentary as needed. Mention that the links in the paragraph provide helpful examples for the concepts being discussed.
