What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI): the creation of machines that can perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as problem-solving, learning, and perception. (Spencer)

There are several subsets of AI. These include:

  • Generative AI - creates new and original content: images, music, text - that is similar to what humans can produce
  • Machine Learning - training machines to make decision or predictions based on data
  • Deep Learning - a subset of Machine Learning - it analyzes complex data to make predictions or decisions using neural networks without training

What is ChatGPT?

  • ChatGPT (Generative pre-trained transformer) is an API chatbot.
    • API - Application Programming Interface - software that allows other software to communicate
    • Chatbot - program that simulates human conversation
  • It is a form of Machine Learning - it uses data from the internet and algorithms to respond to user queries.
  • Developed by OpenAI - released November 2022
  • In 2 months it had over 100 million users To compare: this took TikTok about nine months and Instagram 2-1/2 years, according to data from Sensor Tower.(Reuters)

How can I prevent this?

  • Talk with the students. Explain the potential negative impact on grades, overall understanding of content and development of skills.

  • Have them create drafts in their own handwriting during class.

  • Use Version History in Google Workspace to see content that was written vs. copied and pasted.

  • Ask students to hyperlink evidence from any text to online sources they used.

  • Have students record their screens as they write (Screencastify) and share it with you.

  • Rethink your assignments - are there ways to make them cheat proof?

  • Have kids write a process reflection where they explain how they created the assignment and what the challenges were.

Probably not.

Future workers will need to know how to use AI by effectively using key terms, crafting targeted queries, using data, becoming skilled editors, and much more.

Critical thinking will be critical.

Rather than block, WE will need to adapt and adopt.

In other words…

In order to thrive in a world where AI is increasingly prevalent, future workers will need to develop new skills, such as key term proficiency, data analysis, critical thinking, and editing. Rather than blocking access to AI, we need to embrace it and prioritize education and training on how to use it effectively.

  • ChatGPT (when asked to clean up Dave’s phrasing)

Not to mention…

  • Information and Media Literacy Skills, such as those taught by the library media specialists, and increasing critical.
    • News literacy / Media literacy - the ability to navigate real from fake sources of information. Videos, images, articles, social media posts, etc. To identify news sources from other information.
    • Information literacy - choosing the best sources for your academic need. Professional vs. Amatuer, Database vs. Free Web, etc.

How can this enhance the writing process for students?

Students/Teachers can use chatbots to:

  • Brainstorm ideas for essays
  • Explain writing concepts
  • Provide samples of writing at different levels
  • Generate essay outlines
  • Reword Thesis Statements
  • Organize information in an intro or conclusion that the student has written
  • Check for grammar, spelling, and clarity of expression
  • Suggest options for more sophisticated forms of expression

Why continue to teach research/essay writing if this exists?

Every writer has a voice! Good writing goes beyond putting ideas on the page.

We teach students about author’s craft, tone, audience, academic vs narrative, persuasion, etc.

The writing process is an exercise for the brain, a playground for thinking skills.

AI creates formulaic responses to prompts, but stumbles (for now…) on complex writing tasks.

ALSO:

  • ChatGPT seems to make up a lot of the information it gives us.
  • Quotes from books are misworded, or completely fabricated.
  • Facts are often attributed to sources that don’t exist and Wikis are among the resources used
  • Showing students these weaknesses will help them see the limitations of use.

Shannon’s Recent Use of AI

Add YouTube Transcript to QuestionWell - exported questions to Blooket

Novel Discussion Questions based on Summary

I took a summary of a book from GoodReads and had ChatGPT create a list of discussion questions for my book club! Most were great questions.

Lists of quotes for Social Media

I use these quotes to do a bulk create in Canva to create social media posts.

Library Ideas

I think this was generated by a CASL member (@technojohnson) about all ways librarians could use it.

Equity and Diversity Statement

Trying to write a new statement, asked ChatGPT for help!
