What is the CAL GRANT?

In 2021, Melville was awarded the Coding As Another Language grant through the Rhode Island Department of Education. We were one of 10 districts in the state chosen for this grant work. The grant amount was $15, 725 and included:

  • Teacher training in the Scratch Jr. application and coding curriculum
  • Melville’s ISC received a certification in Early Childhood Technology through Tufts University
  • 36 IPads (12 per classroom) that is used for our classroom work and will be utilized for years to come

What are our students doing?

  • This is a two year grant funded project, In year, staff completed training and students were assessed on coding and technology skills. During year two, the curriculum is implemented.
  • Students are learning coding and programming through play. In class, students work on open ended projects in areas that are of high interest to them. They learn how to work with others and problem solve through the coding playground. Students are able to use their imaginations and become inspired by themselves and their peers.
